Tasting Notes:

About:
Bourbon distilled from a mash bill of 70% corn, 22% malted rye, and 8% malted barley; aged at least four years; bottled at 100 proof; priced at $64.99.
Appearance:
There is a very prototypical darker golden-amber color in this glass, showcasing moderate legs and thicker viscosity.
Nose:
The aromatics of this bourbon reflect the influence of rye in the profile, but the malted aspect of this grain twists things up. Notes to consider here include baked rye bread, lovely vanilla intermingled with oak nuances, warm cherry pie, a slight undercurrent of black pepper, and yummy molasses.
Palate:
Like on the nose, the malted rye that’s second in command behind the corn plays with the palate differently versus its non-malted sibling. You’ll want to spend some time with this one, enjoying noteworthy palate pleasantries such as vanilla cream pie, brown sugar, a caramel back bite, a kiss of oak, some coriander, a subtle maple candy, and a weird cherry tagalong.
Finish:
This is a pleasant and not-overly aggressive finish, carrying itself on a slightly more sweet side into oblivion in a moderate amount of time.
Comments:
If you’re looking for a unique spin on a bottled-in-bond bourbon, given the malted rye presence, you’ve found it in Milam & Greene Bottled in Bond Straight Bourbon Whiskey. This is dialed tight, hitting the proper tasting considerations at the right moments. Well done.

Milam & Greene, located in Blanco, Texas, is an interesting case study in multi-state distilling. The distilling team here, anchored by CEO, master blender, and author Heather Greene and 30-year whiskey veteran and master distiller Marlene Holmes, produces its whiskeys at its Texan home facility on copper pot stills. They also travel to Bardstown, Kentucky, throughout the year to distill on continuous column stills using a unique yeast strain and a proprietary mash bill of 70% corn, 22% malted rye, and 8% malted barley.

The aging of Milam & Greene whiskeys takes place in rick houses across four states in casks with an assortment of char levels, resulting in what the brand says is “the most thorough array of casks made and collected by any craft distiller.” Their focus on this level of attention to detail has garnered them a fair share of recognition, including being named “2023 Rising Star Spirits Company of the Year” at The Ascot Awards, followed by Greene being awarded “Master Blender of the Year.”

Across the range of both core and limited edition expressions, Milam & Greene has, until this point, been missing out on that one type of expression many consider a badge of American whiskey honor – the bottled-in-bond bourbon. Now, they’ve released one.

What’s in the bottle

Milam & Greene Bottled in Bond Straight Bourbon Whiskey, which is being reviewed here, is first distilled in Kentucky from the previously mentioned mash bill, making this a high-rye-style bourbon with a malted rye twist. It was made in the Autumn of 2019 and rested in char-4 oak barrels in a U.S. bonded warehouse. After careful aging and monitoring, in the spring of 2024, 72 barrels were selected and brought to Blanco batching and hand-bottling at precisely 100 proof.

“We’ve been eagerly monitoring the maturation of this bourbon for almost five freaking years and watching how it has developed into its gorgeous flavors over time,” said Greene at the time of its release. “I am over the moon with how this turned out. Using the column stills in Kentucky and adherence to the Bottled in Bond Act regulations added a refinement and subtlety that fans of traditional bourbon will love.”
