Tasting Notes:

About:
A Texas bourbon first aged four years in New American oak, followed by a Texas honey infusion, and then finishing three more years in ex-Cognac casks. It is bottled at 114 proof and priced at $179.99.
Appearance:
This has a gorgeous amber hue with additional red overtones in the glass. It offers moderate legs and light viscosity.
Nose:
The aromatics of this bring forward at first the sweet corn, heavy vanilla-esque nature you find in typical Garrison bourbon, but they are tempered by gentle, sweeter notes of cloying honey, baked biscuits, a kiss of toasted almonds, some oak, and a few cloves.
Palate:
This is an intense experience on the palate, shining forward with a sweet honey flare courtesy of that honey infusion period. It is backed by a nudge of vanilla and oak, typical to this bourbon profile, and some marshmallows, a kiss of coriander, a bit of green tea, just a hint of strawberries, and some anise.
Finish:
This finishes with a honey forward push-off, leaving a sweet, slightly cloying feel in your back throat that fades after a long moment.
Comments:
Garrison Brothers Lady Bird Bourbon (2024) is an interesting animal for someone who’s a big fan of much of this distillery’s line-up. The honey infusion makes for some interesting tasting, but that Cognac cask finish takes this off into the wild. I can’t say I’m as big of a fan of this as other Garrison bottlings, though I appreciate the environmental tie-in.

Editor’s Note: We received a review sample of this whiskey from the brand. However, in accordance with our editorial policies, this has not influenced the outcome of our review in any way.

Garrison Brothers, a working distillery located on a small rural farm and ranch in the Texas Hill Country, has the distinction of having introduced the first bourbon whiskey legally made in Texas in 2010 and has since developed a rabid fan base. Every expression of bourbon is made from a sweet mash bill and barrel-aged in the intense Texas climate. The extreme heat is said to create multiple aging seasons in a year, helping to develop what has become an award-winning portfolio over the years.

One particular bourbon, the Garrison Brothers Lady Bird Bourbon, is a favorite of Nancy Garrison, co-founder of the distillery. It honors the legacy of its namesake, Lady Bird Johnson, and her commitment to the environment and native wildflowers. $5 from every bottle sold is donated to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, “dedicated to preserving the native plants of North America and fostering an appreciation for nature’s awe-inspiring beauty.”

What’s in the bottle

The focus of this review, Garrison Brothers Lady Bird Bourbon (2024), was first released in 2023. Under the guidance of Garrison Brothers Master Distiller Donnis Todd, it starts its life as the Garrison Brothers Small Batch that is aged for four years in new white American oak barrels before being infused with Burleson’s Texas Wildflower Honey for an additional 8-9 months, creating the cask strength Garrison Brothers HoneyDew.

The bourbon is then transferred into French Cognac XO casks to mature for an additional three years.

“I celebrate the 2024 release of Garrison Brothers Lady Bird Bourbon,” said Garrison at the time of its release. “This marks the second year we’ve offered this beautiful and highly sought-after bourbon. Lady Bird continues to be a tribute to Lady Bird Johnson herself and the many gifts she gave us. It reminds us to take a minute to truly enjoy the extraordinary beauty of nature… and the extraordinary flavor in our glass. Garrison Brothers Lady Bird Bourbon embodies delicious notes of wildflower honey along with the delicate floral flavors and aroma that evoke a fine French cognac.”
