A. Overholt Straight Rye review

Tasting Notes

About:

A four year old rye whiskey distilled from the same mashbill Overholt founder Abraham Overholt used in 1810 – 80% rye grain and 20% soft malted barley. It is bottled at 95 proof and priced at $39.99.
Appearance:
This drifts towards the lighter side of golden amber in the glass, showcasing moderate legs and light viscosity.
Nose:
The aromatics suggest a smooth and slightly textured set of smells, broadcasting into the nose notes of wheat grass, baked bread, a hint of black pepper, a little bit of peanut butter, and some oak.
Palate:
On opening into the palate, this is light, earthy, and a bit peppery, suggesting a rye whiskey that plays well with the malted barley component of its mash bill. Notes to consider here include baked bread, a bit of oak, a slight touch of black anise, a kiss of honey, and some coriander.
Finish:
The end point on this whiskey is a touch peppery and spicy as it heads out to pasture, offering a moderate finish.
Comments:
A. Overholt Straight Rye delivers a nice, pleasant drinking experience, particularly for its acceptable price tag. This isn’t a knock it out of the park offering, but something that can be enjoyed alone or as a nice cocktail base.
