The Macallan 18 Year Old might be one of the longest-running age-stated whiskies on the market, and there's a reason for its enduring demand.

Tasting Notes:

About:
The 2024 release of The Macallan’s annual 18 year olds, matured exclusively in sherry oak casks.
Appearance:
Autumn Orange
Nose:
A huge hit of all good things in sherry! Soreen loaf, brown butter, raisins, ginger, vanilla, milk chocolate, a little hint of mint, and something reminiscent of olive oil. The oak notes and the brown butter on this 2024 batch are particularly alluring. The ginger mixed in with the milk chocolate notes are very festive and comfortable. It’s exactly what you want from an old glass of sherry driven single malt.
Palate:
Initially sweet with strawberry cream and chocolate, and then comes the raisins! An almost carbon copy of the nose. Loads of ginger, vanilla, creamy chocolate, slight oaky spices, cinnamon, baked apples, and a little flurry of mint appears again, just at the end.
Finish:
More wonderfully festival favour profiles. Cinnamon, ginger spice, mocha coffee, Caramac chocolate bars, and some slightly drying oak and spice around the sides of your tongue. This is such a comfortable, relaxing flavour profile. You can see why it’s so loved across the world.
Comments:
It is a more complex offering than the 12 Year Old Sherry Cask, but for the extra money it isn’t that much more complex. Complexity isn’t everything, I do have to say, but for the extra cash you’ll spend on this, you’d want more in a few different ways.
The Macallan 18 Year Olds have been a staple of the distillery’s range for decades.

Does The Macallan Still Make Good Whisky?

Of course, it does. But as a consumer, you’re going to pay a premium for it. Someone was bound to dominate the ‘ultra-premium’ category of single malt whisky. A few years ago, The Dalmore nearly claimed that spot with a £1,000,000 set of whiskies at Harrods. The Macallan had even bigger ambitions and has since broken the world record for the most expensive whisky multiple times. It has also released the oldest bottle of whisky in existence.

Beyond that, The Macallan has forged partnerships with prestigious brands like Bentley, Cirque du Soleil, Peter Blake, Lalique Crystal, and many others. The whisky itself remains excellent—after all, it was already aging in casks when people were raving about The Macallan a decade ago. This isn’t a new product; it has spent nearly two decades in the barrel. Yes, the price has increased, but that hasn’t stopped brands like Rolex and Ferrari from maintaining mass appeal worldwide.

How Does The Macallan 18 Year Old Compare With Other 18 Year Old Whiskies?

There are still big sherried whiskies in this category, including Glendronach 18 Year Old, The Dalmore 18 Year Old, Glenallachie 18 Year Old, and Speyburn 18 Year Old. Even classics like The Glenlivet and Glenfiddich 18 Year Old fall into this group—though not as heavily sherried, they remain noteworthy contenders. The latter two are widely available and relatively affordable, but Glenallachie 18 Year Old and Speyburn 18 Year Old are worth special attention if you want something similar to The Macallan but with a unique twist.

All these whiskies offer rich sherried notes of deep fruit and chocolate, much like The Macallan. However, factors like cask type—whether bourbon, Madeira, or port—can impact price. Ultimately, what you pay depends on which brand you believe delivers the best experience.

Why Is The Macallan 18 Year Old Always in Demand?

The Macallan 18 Year Old might be one of the longest-running age-stated whiskies on the market, and there’s a reason for its enduring demand. Its global marketing strategy, high-profile business partnerships, limited-edition releases, and reputation as a ‘golden god’ of whisky contribute to its appeal.

Beyond the branding, The Macallan continues to produce whisky that tastes exceptional. However, age statements now come with a hefty price tag—either accessible to the ultra-wealthy or considered an investment-worthy asset for regular consumers. The fact that The Macallan is viewed as more than just a whisky distillery speaks volumes about its status in the industry.
