About:
The Gospel Straight Rye Whiskey is made with single-sourced 100% Australian (specifically, Victoria) unmalted rye and embodies the rich spice and complexity of traditional rye whiskey while carrying a distinctively Australian edge. A really unique approach to rye that delivers something fun and unexpected. The Gospel say that they strictly follow the rules of Straight’ whiskey—no additives, no shortcuts, just time + oak + craft and as Australia doesn’t have the same regulations as the rest of the world this one is aged for a minimum of jut two years. Maturation does happen on an accelerated schedule down here though and that, coupled with the heavily toasted new American oak barrels means you get a lot of flavor and depth from such a young whiskey. Well regarded on the award scene and a flavor profile you’ve probably yet to experience, this one is worth a try.
Appearance:
Rich Honey Amber
Nose:
Definitely a rye but different, not Christmas pudding but whiskey tea loaf. Dense rich fruit, a touch of black tea, all wrapped in sugary sweetness and vanilla. Very inviting nose.
Palate:
Some great spice upfront thanks to that South Australian rye and a ton of buttery, caramel apple around the middle of the palate. A little short at the back initially but dried fruits and cherries start to appear as you revisit for another sip. The oak and a touch of youth can be found but the peppery heat lands perfectly at 45% abv.
Finish:
A bit of a dry finish but a lot of the richness (almost syrup like) remains on the palate and I’m not mad about it. You can find the youth of the spirit a bit more clearly here on the finish but either way, a surprising and sessionable crowd pleaser that might quickly divide the big whiskey drinkers in the room.
Comments:
Such a standalone rye thanks to its Australian grown, un-malted rye that it’s hard to compare to anything more commonly known in the market.

“Whiskey is the religion, rye is the gospel” has to be one of the best taglines in the game and it could be my imagination but I believe there was an even closer play not he religious theme when they first started up, crucifix and all. Whether true or not, they are infinitely more acquirable by a big supplier now (not that it’s the goal), and all round, one of the most well executed brand experiences in the game the world over.

I’m not a fan of the Solera Rye that they have as a permanent release but this Straight Rye and some of their other limited releases have really captured my interest and I can’t wait to see how the liquid evolves over the next few years.

Must try, keep it open on the bar.
