Tasting Notes

About:

Mossburn Famille Dupont is a 12 year old blended malt scotch whisky, comprising single malts from Speyside that were finished in Calvados casks from Domaine Dupont. It is bottled at cask strength, 57.2% abv.

Appearance:
Pale gold
Nose:
Fresh apple notes that turn to cloudy apple juice (apple cider). Baked pear with light, perfumed vanilla. Clear honey and oatcakes, A sprinkling of powdered cinnamon and ginger. Lemon curd slices. Toasted almonds and creamy Greek yoghurt. With time, the baked pear shifts to pear drops. The aroma sweetens with the addition of water and the apple character is dialled up.
Palate:
Medium bodied. Buttery apple streusel – I can feel pastry and a crumbly oat topping along with the soft, spiced fruit. Creamy caramel and milk chocolate. A hint of tinned peach. Subtle, syrupy stem ginger and ripe Conference pears, particularly the slightly earthy skins. With time, toasted salted almonds. It loses some of its nuance with water, but a nice note of spiced apple cake comes forward.
Finish:
Long and gently drying. There’s lingering nuttiness alongside raw apple (the flesh and peel) and shortcrust pastry dough.
Comments:
As one would hope from a scotch whisky that has seen the inside of a Calvados cask, this is bursting with autumnal orchard flavours. It’s also well behaved for its proof, so if sipping, I’d recommend keeping it neat. However, if you want to mix it… I discovered a Calvados Old Fashioned recipe over Christmas in which this would make an excellent partner, or replacement, for the brandy.
