Tasting Notes

About:

A Glen Keith bottling from independent bottler Claxton’s, released under The Single Cask bottling series. This expression from Speyside’s Glen Keith was matured in a bourbon barrel, which yielded only 146 bottles. Distilled in December 1994, this Glen Keith was bottled at 23 years old, at 51% ABV.

Appearance:
Golden Straw
Nose:
There’s some considerable influence from the bourbon cask, an initial hit of vanilla, caramel, and honey. Left to breathe for a while, some sweet notes of cinnamon, Demerara sugar, chocolate, and marshmallow appear. There’s lots of clear sweet tropical and citrus fruit notes, including banana, pineapple, lemon, and papaya.
Palate:
Sweetness is again evident, with an opening wave of vanilla – accompanied by a little oiliness and a waxy mouthfeel. This is followed by candied citrus fruit sweets, with flavours of pineapple, lemon, and bitter orange. A slightly unseasoned green oak note, almost a little grassy, and a hint of pepper.
Finish:
Long, with creamy honey and tropical citrus fruits. The Beeswax note and mouthfeel persists, fading slowly into spicy oak.
Comments:
Wow, this is a stunning example of well-aged bourbon cask matured whisky. From the moment you pour there are some intense aromas. There’s real sweetness to this whisky, perfectly balanced alongside the depth and strength of those fruity flavours is a testament to the age and cask maturation – the very active bourbon barrel has given everything to this one!
An excellent example of Glen Keith’s spirit, and Claxton’s releases – I think I need another tasting sample!
