About:

A Glenrothes single cask bottling from independent bottler Claxton’s, released under the Warehouse No.8 premium range which focuses on expressions from octaves and smaller cask types. This expression from Speyside’s Glenrothes was matured in a Maderia wine octave, which yielded only 69 bottles. Distilled in 2009, this Glenrothes was bottled at 11-Years-Old, at 58.1 % ABV.

Appearance:

Rich Amber

Nose:

Very expressive sweet opening with rich wine fruity notes. With a little time and air, the initial sweetness gives way to rich chocolate, toffee and sweet raisins and dark fruits. There’s some underlying floral notes of honeysuckle and heather.

Palate:

Rich and very sweet fruity flavours dominate, it’s a combination of canned fruit cocktail on syrup and fruit salad sweets. There’s a thick syrupy sweet mouthfeel. A little chocolate before some final flavours of drying oak and all spice.

Finish:

Medium long, with sweet fruits, milk chocolate, and oak.

Comments:

A very sweet Glenrothes, which is quite different from the mainstream sherried Glenrothes expressions widely available. I enjoyed the varied fruity notes, and considering the 58.1% ABV, this was a very easy drinking whisky – you could easily think the ABV was much lower. Despite this, the thick syrupy sweetness left me craving something savoury afterwards.
