Tasting Notes:

About:
Independent bottler Chapter 7 Whisky released this Glen Grant 24 Year Old as part of their Monologue collection. Distilled in January 1998 and bottled in January 2022, this Speyside whisky was matured in a single bourbon hogshead (cask 6454), allowing Glen Grant’s elegant character to shine. Bottled at 51.1% ABV, with natural colour and no chill filtration, the cask yielded 254 bottles.
Appearance:
Light honey. Oily, with lots of little tears developing into parallel legs down the side of the glass.
Nose:
Buttery shortbread. Orchard fruits with apples and pears, together with a touch of lemon citrus. Golden syrup and oats. Oak, vanilla, and a little wood spice.
Palate:
Medium mouthfeel. Elegant, round, and characteristic of Glen Grant\’s consistent quality. Sweet malt with red apples in early Autumn. Vanilla and honey cake with lemon zest. Gentle oak and warming wood spice. Alcohol is well integrated.
Finish:
Medium to long finish with apples, cereal, and just a touch of wood spice.
Comments:
An excellent Glen Grant where the quality spirit has been elegantly aged in an archetypal ex-bourbon style.

Why Is Glen Grant Normally Found In Ex-Bourbon Casks?

Ex-bourbon casks are fundamental to whisky maturation across all whisky-producing countries. It is rare to find a distillery that focuses exclusively on another type of wood, though some do exist. The beauty of Glen Grant—whether in their official bottlings or independent releases (like this one from Chapter 7)—is that their house style is so distinct and easy to appreciate when matured in ex-bourbon casks.

Sherry and other fortified wines can produce wonderful maturation results. However, using ex-bourbon casks allows for less interference with the distillery’s spirit. Sherry, port, Madeira, and similar cask influences offer fantastic flavors, but their high sugar content and syrupy nature can dominate the profile, making the cask the star rather than the spirit itself. Glen Grant, with its beautifully light, fruity, and classic Speyside character, truly shines in ex-bourbon casks, revealing tropical notes and gentle buttery flavors.

Should You Buy Chapter 7 Monologue Glen Grant 24 Year Old

If you’re looking for well-aged Speyside whisky at reasonable prices, Glen Grant is a fantastic choice. The distillery—and many independent bottlers—have a wealth of old Glen Grant stock, making these whiskies both widely available and relatively affordable. While independent bottlings can explore a variety of cask types, having a 24-year-old Glen Grant matured in ex-bourbon casks is a real treat. It’s a delightful addition to any collection and would also serve as an excellent light opener for a whisky tasting.
