Tasting Notes

About:

A 1976 vintage whisky from Islay’s Bruichladdich Distillery bottled by independent bottler Cadenhead’s as part of their Authentic Collection series. The Authentic Collection showcases single cask, cask strength whiskies selected from operational Scottish malt distilleries. Distilled in 1976, and matured for 17-Years in an oak cask, this Bruichladdich was bottled in July 1994, at 52.1% ABV.
Appearance:
Dark Gold
Nose:
Aromas of fresh green herbs, including mint and thyme, moving to slightly sour Granny Smith apples, or possibly cider vinegar. There’s background hints of eucalyptus and lemon, alongside a slight coastal note of salt and sea air.
Palate:
Opens with cooked apples, there seems to be some sherry influence with notes of stewed figs and dates. This gives way to ginger and lemon citrus, before a little bitter dark chocolate and espresso. There’s a slightly oily mouthfeel, with a whisper of background smoke.
Finish:
Medium, oak, herbs and pepper linger. Fresh menthol returns on the finish, alongside a touch of pine.
Comments:
This is a complex and well-layered Bruichladdich. I particularly like the balance between the fruity apple and fresh herbal notes on the nose and palate.

This vintage Bruichladdich was unlike anything I’ve experienced with Bruichladdich’s modern style, including Port Charlotte and Octomore. An interesting old independent Bruichladdich expression, with plenty of depth at 52.1% ABV.
