About:

Nestled just south of Ardmore in the Scottish Highlands, Balblair is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, with history dating back to 1790. The distillery is small but mighty, and prides itself on traditional distilling methods. The Balblair 12 Year Old is the entry point to the distillery’s range. Aged exclusively in ex-bourbon casks for 12 years, scotch whisky fans laud the balanced and gentle nature of this expression. Let’s give it a try.
Appearance:
Tawny gold
Nose:
Wow, did anyone first pick up soreen loaf? I think this is reminiscent of the SMWS bottling from a few years back. There’s lemon, vanilla and a scrape of joiners workshop in the nose here.
Palate:
Sweet malt immediately, followed by lashings of clean and crisp fruit. There is a nutty influence here, cashews, walnuts, or honey roasted peanuts.
Finish:
The finish doesn’t bring anything new but that isn’t a bad thing. All the flavours that have arrived in nosing and tasting are carried on, and it’s a talent to be able to provide that consistency.
Comments:
This is another great 12 year old spirit, longing for someone who ‘loves the idea of loving it, more than actually loving it’ to change their perspective on Scotlands tipple. It is a great ‘introduction’ whisky and price point is pretty spot on.
