Tasting Notes:

About:
This 7 year old whisky from Auchroisk Distillery was bottled as part of the Parkmore Selection – a collection of single malts matured in dunnage warehosues at Coleburn Distillery and then specially selected for Parkmore. This specific whisky was finished in rare Madeira wine casks.
Appearance:
A deep mahogany.
Nose:
This. Is. Interesting.
There ‘s an instant light and fine floral wall garden coming to the fore here, with a nice grainy malty note. I’m getting a little of the ‘giant strawbs’ from Haribo here, as well as soft French nougat.
Palate:
This is nippy sweetie territory here. My lips have puckered! There is a tartness from the wood tannins which gives notes of burnt caramel and a decent whack of pepper.
Finish:
Slightly high on the alcohol front, despite being 46%. It almost, upon second nosing could be confused by a high alcohol gin liqueur.
Comments:
Upon first nosing, I would have mistaken this to actually be a gin liqueur, but on closer inspection, nosing and tasting, it is indeed whisky. I’ve always known Auchroisk to be sweet, but never as tart as this. I feel that it could have been let to rest for a few more years. The madeira finish is possibly at fault here for the inauthentic strawberry flavour on the nose, and the pepper nip on the tongue. A confusing whisky.
