Tasting Notes

About:

A 15 Year Old Lowland malt from Auchentoshan, released as part of independent bottler Berry Bros. & Rudd’s Single Cask: Crafted in Cask collection. Distilled in 2010, and matured for 15 years in a single barrel, before a finishing period in a Pomerol wine cask. Only 174 bottles were produced, bottled without artificial colouring or chill filtration at natural cask strength of 55.7% ABV.
Appearance:
Bright Copper
Nose:
The nose opens with sweet creamy vanilla, integrating some cocoa and milk chocolate sweetness. Fruity notes develop including cherries, strawberries, and raspberries combining with a little marzipan and almond reminiscent of Bakewell tarts. In the background, a hint of soft leather.
Palate:
Smooth, with a slightly oily mouthfeel. Lots of vinous red fruit notes, including strawberry, plum and raspberry. Fruits give way to the return of chocolate sweetness which combines with biscuity malt, before some cinnamon and pepper spice.
Finish:
Stewed plums, berries, and cherries give way to a final hit of chocolate which fades into peppery oak spice with cinnamon for a medium-long warming and subtly drying finish.
Comments:
Situated on the outskirts of Glasgow, Auchentoshan is one of the only Scottish distilleries practicing triple distillation. In this single cask Auchentoshan from Berry Bros. & Rudd, the Pomerol wine finishing cask influence has resulted in a whisky with lots of juicy red fruit notes, chocolate sweetness and oaky spice. The notes are clearly defined and well balanced, I particularly like the red fruits and chocolate notes notably when biscuity malt appears on the palate. The oaky spice does overtake the fruits and chocolate to become a little drying on the finish, but this is an enjoyable whisky offering a distinct variation on Auchentoshan’s core range releases.
