Tasting Notes:

About:
Where do we even start with Four Roses? The only bourbon distillery who combine two different mash bills with five different yeast strains in order to create ten very distinct styles of Kentucky straight bourbon. The Small Batch release we’re reviewing below is combination of 20 barrels, all aged between 6/7 years with a combination of these Four Roses flavour profiles: OBSK X2 – OBSO X3 – OESK X7 – OESO X8. Do see below for a full breakdown for the codes and what they mean for you as a drinker of Four Roses bourbon.
Appearance:
Brown Butter
Nose:
All of the wonderful things that bourbon can offer. I always tell people that all Four Roses products just smell like butter, this one is no different. Brown butter cookies, cookie dough, molasses, fresh mint, cherry, nutmeg, Tonka bean, milk chocolate, strawberry and milky coffee.
Palate:
Silky and soft with just a little hint of oak and spice. The caramel and butter come through right away, allowing a soft approach for the punchier flavours of rye, mint, more cherry and waves of baked vanilla and cookie dough. A sumptuous pour to get you through any situation.
Finish:
Still leads with sweetness, even at 45%, but you get more of those Christmas driven rye flavours now. It’s cinnamon, nutmeg again, even a little sherry focused with notes of dark chocolate and raisins.
Comments:
I love this bottle. If the single barrel release is a just a little too much, then this is the perfect counter to that. It has all the delicacies and nuances of any Four Roses product, but is so attainable across the world, too.

This is an amazing house pour for yourself, family and friends, but it’s also a really good cocktail ingredient. Four Roses is no stranger to the world of Old Fashioned’s and Whisky Sours, you can even get more experimental with drinks like The Gold Rush or a Brown Derby for those earthier notes of honey, or tangier notes of grapefruit.

No matter what your budget or situation, this is a rather outstanding bottle of bourbon that deserves every bit of applause it receives.
