Woodford Reserve Launches American Single Malt

Woodford Reserve has unveiled its first age-stated American single malt whiskey, marking a significant entry in the newly recognized spirits category. The distillery will release the limited-edition 12-year-old whiskey exclusively through Kentucky retailers and its visitor center beginning August 14 as part of the Distillery Series.

Woodford Reserve 12 Year Old American Single Malt Debuts as Limited Release

The new whiskey represents a departure from traditional bourbon production methods. Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall crafted the spirit using 100% malted barley, triple pot distillation, and aging in used whiskey barrels rather than new oak. The 90.4 proof whiskey carries a suggested retail price of $99.99 for a 375ml bottle.

“I’m excited to release this 12-year-old American Single Malt, a whiskey that proves just how essential long aging in used barrels is for unlocking its full flavor potential,” said McCall. “I believe it’s one of the most authentic American Single Malts ever released — the first of its kind.”

The release comes at a pivotal moment for American whiskey. The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau recently established official standards for American single malt whiskey, creating a formal category that allows distillers to differentiate their products from bourbon and rye. This regulatory change enables producers to explore new production methods while educating consumers about the distinct characteristics of American single malts.

Woodford Reserve American Single Malt Showcases Extended Aging

The 12-year aging period distinguishes this release from typical American whiskeys.

According to official tasting notes, the whiskey displays a burnt orange color with aromas of soft caramel, sun tea, and pear. The palate features sweet nutty malt and caramel flavors, followed by notes of sun tea with clove and lemon. The finish extends with lingering sun tea and lemon oil characteristics.

The expression joins Woodford Reserve’s Distillery Series, a collection designed to showcase experimental production techniques. Unlike the distillery’s flagship bourbon, this single malt demonstrates how extended aging in previously used barrels creates a lighter color and more nuanced flavor profile compared to new oak maturation.

Distribution remains limited to Kentucky retailers and the Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles. Online ordering is available for shipping to Kentucky, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Nebraska, and Washington D.C. through the brand’s website.

The introduction of this age-stated American single malt signals growing interest in the category among established bourbon producers. As more distilleries explore single malt production, the category continues carving out its own identity within the American spirits landscape, offering whiskey enthusiasts alternatives to traditional bourbon and rye expressions.
