Pittsburgh-based Wigle Whiskey has launched a cherry-flavored bourbon that draws inspiration from George Washington’s favorite tipple. The craft distillery’s new Cherry Whiskey reimagines the colonial-era Cherry Bounce cordial for modern palates, joining the growing flavored whiskey category that has expanded rapidly across the spirits industry.
Historical Roots Shape Modern Whiskey Innovation
Cherry Bounce dates back to America’s colonial period when the sweet cordial served as a centerpiece at social gatherings. The traditional recipe combined tart cherries, sugar, and spices like cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg steeped in brandy for weeks or months. George Washington reportedly kept the drink in his Mount Vernon cellars, and Martha Washington’s own recipe still exists in historical archives.

Wigle’s interpretation swaps brandy for bourbon while maintaining the drink’s characteristic cherry sweetness. The distillery describes official tasting notes of almond, cinnamon, and vanilla in the finished product. The release aligns with Wigle’s focus on Pennsylvania whiskey history, particularly the Whiskey Rebellion that occurred in the region during the 1790s.
“Flavored whiskeys have seen incredible growth across the industry, as more people are discovering approachable and creative ways to enjoy whiskey,” said Alex Moser, Chief Operating Officer at Wigle Whiskey.
Flavored Whiskey Market Continues Expansion
The flavored whiskey segment has grown significantly in recent years, with major producers like Jack Daniel’s and Jim Beam expanding their portfolios beyond traditional expressions. Market data shows flavored whiskeys now account for approximately 15% of American whiskey sales, with honey and cinnamon varieties leading consumer preferences.
Wigle positions itself within this trend while emphasizing craft production methods. The distillery sources grains from local Pennsylvania farmers and maintains grain-to-glass production at its Pittsburgh facility. The company has earned recognition as the Most Awarded Craft Distillery by the American Craft Spirits Association and ranks among USA Today’s top 10 craft distilleries in America.
Cherry Whiskey is available at Wigle’s Pittsburgh distillery, its Ross Park Mall bottle shop, and online for shipping within Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. through wiglewhiskey.com. The company has not disclosed pricing information for the new release.
The launch comes as craft distilleries increasingly experiment with flavored expressions to attract new consumers and differentiate their products in a competitive market. Wigle’s historical approach provides a narrative that distinguishes its offering from mass-market alternatives while capitalizing on consumer interest in both craft spirits and American history.
