Wemyss Malts Velvet Fig Returns as 12 Year Old Blend

Wemyss Malts has announced the return of its Velvet Fig blended malt whisky with a 12-year-old age statement, marking the third iteration in the series. The limited edition release launches today (26 November 2025) before rolling out across the EU and globally from January 2026.

The new expression has been crafted by Wemyss Malts blender Isabella Wemyss using six first-fill sherry casks filled between June and November 2012.

“This release is continuing the legacy of the Velvet Fig series and will be true to previous releases with it being a fruit-forward, sherry-led profile with small-batch quality,” said Wemyss.

The blend comprises three hogsheads and three butts sourced from The Speyside Cooperage.

“Usually, we marry whiskies in the casks for a few weeks, but we’ve taken a different approach with this release and allowed the whiskies to fully mature in sherry-seasoned oak casks for five months, bringing out a high-quality flavour and texture,” Wemyss explained.

Previous editions of Velvet Fig have sold out, prompting the distiller to create this new age-stated version.

Official tasting notes from the brand describe aromas of “red and blackberry, fig, milk chocolate with notes of marzipan and walnut.”

“On the palate, ripe figs, dates, apricots, with the spice of nutmeg, ginger and chestnut which then finishes with cinnamon, pipe tobacco and sweet oak,” added Wemyss.

The whisky is bottled at 46% ABV, is non-chill filtered, and maintains its natural color without additives.

“Velvet Fig has always been known for its rich, fruit-forward character and smooth sherry influence. This new release stays true to that style, but the added age and extra time in cask have really taken the flavour up a notch,” said Wemyss.

Wemyss Family Spirits, which owns Kingsbarns Distillery and Darnley’s Gin, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

The company has been creating blended whiskies since 2005, with Isabella Wemyss overseeing the blending process.

Velvet Fig will be available in limited quantities through the Wemyss Family Spirits online store and select specialist whisky retailers.
