Torabhaig Sound of Sleat Batch Strength Whisky Review

Torabhaig Distillery has launched Sound of Sleat Batch Strength, a limited-edition single malt whisky bottled at 60.2% ABV from the Isle of Skye. The release arrives in time for Burns Night celebrations on January 25, offering whisky enthusiasts a robust expression that amplifies the distillery’s signature coastal character.

The new whisky takes its name from the narrow stretch of sea separating Skye from the Scottish mainland.

Matured exclusively in American oak casks, including both ex-bourbon and new oak, the expression enhances Torabhaig’s characteristic smoke, maritime salinity, and citrus notes.

“Sound of Sleat carries the essence of Skye – smoke, salt, and sea air — bringing the wild Scottish coastline to your glass,” the distillery stated.

The release features bespoke label artwork by Skye-based artist Ellis O’Connor, depicting the movement and energy of the sea surrounding the distillery.

Official tasting notes from the brand describe a nose of “balanced smoke, brine, and oak spice with hints of apricot, orange barley sugar, and tobacco.”

The palate offers “bonfire warmth meets zesty spice, sweet vanilla, and a touch of oriental smoke,” while the finish is “long, smoky, and unmistakably coastal, with lingering pepper and a youthful fiery spirit.”

Torabhaig represents the first new distillery on Skye in nearly 200 years, having begun production in 2017. The distillery employs a small team of local distillers who focus on creating what they term “well-tempered peat” expressions.

The new batch strength release builds upon the success of the distillery’s core Sound of Sleat expression, which launched at 46% ABV.

“At 60.2% ABV, it delivers warmth and intensity, perfect alongside hearty haggis and celebratory recitations,” according to the distillery’s release materials.

Torabhaig Sound of Sleat Batch Strength is priced at £88 and is available through The Whisky Shop and select retailers.

The timing aligns with Burns Night, Scotland’s annual celebration honoring national poet Robert Burns, traditionally marked with whisky toasts, haggis, and poetry recitations.
