A Scottish distillery has unveiled a higher-proof version of its popular island single malt, offering whisky enthusiasts a more intense tasting experience from the Isle of Skye.

Torabhaig’s New Expression Amplifies Island Character

Torabhaig Distillery has released Sound of Sleat Batch Strength, a limited-edition whisky bottled at 60.2% ABV. The new expression builds on the fourth chapter of the distillery’s Legacy Series, intensifying the smoky and maritime qualities that define the original Sound of Sleat release.

The whisky takes its name from the narrow body of water between Skye and mainland Scotland. Matured in American oak casks, including both ex-bourbon and new oak, the expression aims to deliver what the distillery calls its “well-tempered peat” style.

Neil MacLeod Mathieson, Torabhaig whisky maker, said: “We’ve long experimented with offering the same whisky at different strengths as a way to highlight new profiles and unlock new flavours. Sound of Sleat Batch Strength delivers exactly that – big and elegant with more spiciness and a lovely waxy mouthfeel that showcases a new side to our Sound of Sleat whisky.”

The release features artwork by Skye-based artist Ellis O’Connor on its label, continuing the distillery’s practice of collaborating with local creative talent.

Torabhaig Legacy Series Expands to Six Whiskies

Sound of Sleat Batch Strength becomes the sixth release in The Torabhaig Legacy Series, which documents the distillery’s progress toward establishing a 10-year-old flagship expression. The collection began with Torabhaig 2017 and includes Allt Gleann, Cnoc Na Mòine, and both standard and batch strength versions of Sound of Sleat.

According to official tasting notes, the whisky presents smoke, brine, and sweet oak spice on the nose, with hints of tobacco, orange barley sugar, and apricot. The palate offers zesty oak spice, bonfire embers, and a waxy mouthfeel, while the finish is described as long with spice, capsicum, and coastal elements.

The whisky uses Concerto and Laureate malted barley peated to 78+ PPM, resulting in 19 PPM residual phenols in the final product. Like other Torabhaig releases, it undergoes no chill filtration and contains no added color.

Sound of Sleat Batch Strength is available through The Whisky Shop at £75, with 15,000 bottles produced for global distribution.

The release continues Torabhaig’s “Smoke with Taste” philosophy, offering collectors and enthusiasts another perspective on the distillery’s developing house style.
