Iconic independent bottler, The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS), has expanded its 50th Anniversary Cask Club. Specially selected and limited casks are available to purchase and will be bottled in 2033 when SMWS celebrates its 50th anniversary.

The casks are extremely limited in nature, with as few as 10 available in some cases. Prices range from £4,000 to £6,000 depending on the cask, with bottling, VAT, duty, and shipping payable once the cask is bottled in 2033.

The 50th Anniversary Cask Club

SMWS’ 50th Anniversary Cask Club was launched in 2023 as the society celebrated its 40th anniversary. The program allows whisky lovers to purchase their very own cask and watch the whisky mature until 2033 when it will be bottled. Customers will be able to create their own personalized bottlings.

A few casks remain from the original selection, hailing from a Speyside distillery and an island distillery.

SMWS’ New Casks

The new casks selected for the program come from three different distilleries. SMWS has elected to keep the distillery names confidential but has revealed that the casks hail from Islay, the Highlands near Inverness, and the Southern Highlands.

Both peated and unpeated whisky is on offer, and the cask styles available are ex-bourbon, Oloroso sherry, and Pedro Pedro Ximénez. Each cask style imparts a very different profile onto the whisky, ranging from the vanilla and caramel ex-bourbon notes to the dried fruit richness of the sherry casks.

Euan Campbell, Head of Whisky Creation at SMWS, said: “Following the interest in our initial casks, we’ve now added even more options for whisky enthusiasts who want to enjoy the ultimate whisky experience of owning an entire cask and having a front row seat as the spirit matures until 2033. Everything we do is about celebrating and exploring new flavours in whisky and each of these new casks brings its own distinctive character, from the peated richness of Islay to the fruit-forward profiles of the Highlands.”
