The Heart Cut has partnered with Seattle-based Westland Distillery to release a limited-edition American single malt whiskey featuring Washington State peat. The collaboration marks The Heart Cut’s twentieth release and represents the first locally peated single cask Westland has bottled outside its award-winning Solum range.

The whiskey was malted using peat harvested from Washington State, creating what The Heart Cut describes as an “earthy, herbal depth with subtle coastal smoke.”

Official tasting notes from the brand include acacia honey, grilled peaches, and “a warm sea breeze” alongside creamy sweetness and sun-warmed fruit.

The ex-bourbon cask yielded just 306 bottles at 53% ABV.

“Working with partners who understand and appreciate our approach to whiskey-making is incredibly important to us,” said Ana Hinz, Business Development Manager of Westland Distillery.

She added: “It was clear from the outset that The Heart Cut is as passionate as we are about exploring flavorful whiskey with a sense of place.”

The single cask represents a departure for Westland, which typically reserves its locally peated expressions for its Solum range. That series earned recognition at the 2023 World Whiskies Awards.

“The barley was locally grown, and the peat was harvested just a few hours southwest of the distillery,” Hinz explained. “Our local peat has a different makeup of flora than peat from Scotland, and that difference comes through both the nose and the palate of this whiskey.”

Founded in 2011 by Matt Hofmann and Emerson Lamb, Westland has been instrumental in developing the American Single Malt category. The classification received official recognition in early 2025.

“Being able to bottle a one-off single cask from Westland feels incredibly special,” said Georgie Bell, co-founder of The Heart Cut. “They’re one of the early pioneers of the American Single Malt movement, and to work with them on something this distinctive – a whiskey malted with local Washington State peat – is a real honour.”

The Heart Cut #20 Westland retails for £85 and launched exclusively through theheartcut.com on Thursday, 30 October.

Distribution is limited to the UK market.
