The Balvenie has released the second installment of its most exclusive trilogy, with only 97 bottles of this 50-year-old Scotch whisky available worldwide. The Second Edition continues the distillery’s celebration of five decades of whisky-making craft, following last year’s inaugural release.
Rare 50-Year-Old Scotch Whisky
This limited release represents a careful marriage of casks from 1973. Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie combined the First Edition’s European oak refill butt with an American oak hogshead, both filled over 50 years ago. The result showcases the Speyside distillery’s commitment to traditional craftsmanship while pushing flavor boundaries.
According to official tasting notes, the whisky opens with sticky toffee, violet, and rose aromas. The palate reveals molten dates, sweet currants, and subtle citrus zest layered over creamy honey and a buttery finish. The 49.8% ABV expression maintains a lingering oak presence throughout.
“The Balvenie Fifty Collection pays tribute to the makers, craftspeople and custodians who have watched over our liquid for the past five decades,” said Kelsey McKechnie. “The time spent maturing in American oak has nurtured a beautifully balanced character, with notes of sweet honey and warming oak.”
The release continues traditions established by former Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE, who pioneered cask finishing techniques that have become industry standard. Many of the craftspeople who filled these casks in 1973 still work at the distillery today.
Handcrafted Presentation
Each of the 97 bottles comes in hand-blown glass with individual numbering. The packaging includes a custom case crafted by Croglin, a bespoke workshop in Cumbria, England. The design incorporates seven layers of wood in a helix structure with a darker stain than the First Edition and features a 14-carat gold-plated brass display.
The Balvenie trilogy will conclude in 2026 with a third release. The Second Edition is available now with 13 bottles allocated to the United States market at $55,000 (£44,000). The First Edition, released in 2024, established the collection’s foundation with its European oak character.
The 50-year aging process represents one of the longest maturation periods for any Balvenie release. Such extended aging requires careful cask management and climate-controlled warehouses to prevent excessive evaporation, known as the “angel’s share” in whisky production.
The Balvenie distillery was founded in 1892 by William Grant and remains under family ownership through William Grant & Sons. The distilleryis one of a few remaining distilleries in Scotland maintaining traditional floor maltings, employing on-site coopers and a coppersmith. The distillery grows some of its own barley and maintains all five traditional crafts of whisky making under one roof
