Scapa distillery has partnered with outdoor app Outdooractive to create new walking routes across Orkney, combining the island’s rugged landscapes with whisky tasting experiences at journey’s end.

The initiative features three main trails on Orkney, ranging from the 4.2-mile Crantit Trail to the challenging 15-mile Folklore and Stones route. Each path showcases local Orcadian craftsmanship and natural landmarks before concluding at the distillery, where visitors can sample Scapa’s 10, 16, and 21 Year Old single malts.
The Kirkwall to Scapa trail covers 4.7 miles, providing a moderate option between the shorter and longer routes. All trails are mapped on the Outdooractive platform, which provides detailed navigation and points of interest along each journey.

The distillery offers various experiences at the trail endpoints, including guided tours and food pairings in the Scapa Noust tasting room. The menu features Orcadian ingredients prepared with Japanese influences, reflecting contemporary culinary trends in Scotland’s food scene.
London Alternative Brings Scapa Sanctuary Trails to Urban Walkers
For those unable to reach Orkney, Scapa has created a London route incorporating Thames-side paths and city landmarks. The urban trail ends at The Whisky Exchange in London Bridge, where walkers can purchase bottles from Scapa’s aged collection.
The whisky range includes expressions matured for 10, 16, and 21 years, each presented in packaging designed to reflect Orkney’s coastal colors. Master distiller Mick Swanney oversees production at the small-scale distillery on Scapa Flow, the natural harbor that served as a major British naval base during both World Wars.

“The Scapa Sanctuary Trails is an invitation to experience Orkney through the lens of Scapa, to discover the landscapes and traditions that inspire our craft of whisky making,” said Jayne Murphy, marketing director for malts at Chivas Brothers, according to The Scotsman Food & Drink.
The trails launch follows Scapa’s release of its first aged single malt collection in 2024.
Orkney, Scotland’s archipelago of 70 islands, attracts approximately 170,000 visitors annually, with tourism contributing significantly to the local economy.
Prices for distillery experiences vary at Scapa, with tours starting at £30 per person. For a luxury visit, guests can book The Scapa Pairing Experience, which is held in The Noust tasting room, and allows guests to sample four Scapa whiskies with “Orcadian food made with a Japanese twist.”
