Welsh whisky has achieved a significant milestone as Japan formally recognizes Single Malt Welsh Whisky with Geographical Indication (GI) status. Penderyn Distillery has celebrated this formal recognition which represents unprecedented expansion opportunities.
The protected status provides legal safeguards for Welsh whisky exports to Japan’s premium spirits market, home to 124 million consumers in the world’s fourth-largest economy.
Welsh Whisky’s Expanding Asian Presence
Penderyn has already demonstrated strong performance in Asia Pacific, with sales reaching 10,000 cases across the region in 2024. The distillery currently operates three facilities with an annual production capacity of 900,000 liters of pure alcohol, translating to approximately 2.5 million bottles.
“Japan is an important market for world-class single malt whisky, making it a key target market for Penderyn Single Malt Welsh Whisky. We have a great partner (Whisk-E) and together we plan to build awareness and reputation for our unique brand from Wales,” says Stephen Davies, CEO of Penderyn Distillery.
Strategic Growth In Premium Markets
The company’s Dragon series has particularly resonated with Asian consumers. Nicole Liu, Penderyn’s Asia manager, notes: “Our Dragon series, especially Penderyn Legend, resonates strongly with Asian consumers seeking unique, premium whisky experiences.”
This recognition aligns with the UK government’s Plan for Change, aimed at boosting British food and drink exports. The GI status ensures Japanese consumers receive authentic Welsh whisky while protecting against imitation products.
“This recognition in Japan will be a great achievement to support our export strategy,” Davies adds.
