Historic Bourbon Whiskey Returns with Limited Edition
The new release follows the strict standards of the Bottled-in-Bond Act, requiring the whiskey to be produced from a single distillation season, aged at least four years, and bottled at 100 proof. This latest expression extends the aging to seven years, surpassing the minimum requirements.
Old Grand-Dad, first bottled in 1882, has maintained its reputation among bartenders and collectors since being acquired by James B. Beam Distilling Co. in 1987. The brand is known for its higher rye content compared to standard bourbons, contributing to its signature spicy character.
The official tasting notes describe the whiskey as displaying “deep copper tones” in color with a “bold caramel and vanilla” nose. On the palate, tasters can expect “sweet caramel flavors with notes of charred oak & vanilla notes,” leading to a “full-bodied and long” finish with “velvety caramel notes.”
Premium Whiskey Pricing Reflects Extended Aging
The seven-year aging process represents a significant investment in warehouse space and time for the distillery. While pricing details were not disclosed in the announcement, previous Old Grand-Dad bonded releases have typically commanded premium prices compared to the brand’s standard offerings.
The timing aligns with growing consumer interest in bottled-in-bond spirits, which guarantee transparency about production methods and aging. The designation requires all whiskey in the bottle to come from one distillery during one distilling season, stored in a federally bonded warehouse, and aged for at least four years.
Old Grand-Dad’s formula specifically includes more rye grain than typical bourbons, which generally contain at least 51% corn. This higher rye content produces what the company describes as a “spicy yet still pleasantly light flavor” that distinguishes it from sweeter bourbon profiles.

The release continues Old Grand-Dad’s tradition of offering vintage-inspired expressions while maintaining the brand’s characteristic high-rye recipe that has remained largely unchanged since its 19th-century origins.
