North Carolina’s craft spirits scene gained momentum today as Charlotte-based Oaklore Distilling Co. secured distribution through Johnson Brothers, positioning the local whiskey maker for statewide growth amid rising demand for regional American whiskeys.
Johnson Brothers to Distribute Oaklore Distilling Portfolio Statewide
The partnership connects Oaklore’s premium spirits with Johnson Brothers’ extensive network across North Carolina, reaching bars, restaurants, and retail locations from Charlotte to the Outer Banks.
Founded in 1953, Johnson Brothers operates in 17 states with over 4,000 employees, bringing significant distribution expertise to the two-year-old distillery.
“We have seen a real trend of consumers actively seeking out local spirits as their go-to everyday selections, particularly in the whiskey category,” said Thomas Bogan, co-founder of Oaklore Distilling Co. “From our hometown of Charlotte to Raleigh-Durham, Asheville, the Outer Banks and beyond, we’re excited to see our core range of whiskeys and specialty releases available on back bars and liquor store shelves across the state through this new partnership with Johnson Brothers.
The collaboration addresses growing consumer preference for locally produced spirits, particularly in the American whiskey category. North Carolina’s Piedmont region offers unique aging conditions for whiskey production, with its humid subtropical climate creating more frequent temperature fluctuations than traditional whiskey regions like Kentucky. According to Oaklore, these conditions produce more consistent year-to-year aging and develop richer flavor profiles.
Oaklore Distilling and Johnson Brothers Target Local Whiskey Demand
Oaklore’s product range includes Four Grain Bourbon, a 6-year-old North Carolina Straight Rye Whiskey, limited-edition Story Series releases, plus vodka, gin, and rum. The distillery, opened in 2022 by neighbors Matt Simpkins and Thomas Bogan in Matthews, North Carolina, has gained recognition through awards and community initiatives.
The company recently launched a Hurricane Helene recovery fundraiser, donating $5 from each cocktail sold at participating Charlotte-area establishments to the Community Foundation of Henderson County, with contributions reaching up to $10,000.
Johnson Brothers’ involvement strengthens Oaklore’s position as North Carolina craft distilling continues to expand. The American whiskey market has experienced significant growth, with craft producers capturing increased market share as consumers explore beyond mainstream brands.
Will Clements, NC Spirits Director at Johnson Brothers, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership saying, “We are thrilled to partner with Oaklore Distilling Co. and bring their exceptional spirits to more consumers throughout North Carolina. Their commitment to craftsmanship and community aligns perfectly with our values, and we look forward to a very successful collaboration.”
The distribution agreement establishes the groundwork for Oaklore’s planned national expansion. Products remain available for nationwide shipping through the distillery’s website and at their Matthews facility.
