Michter’s, the acclaimed Kentucky distillery, is set to release its US*1 Barrel Strength Rye whiskey to bars, restaurants, and retail outlets beginning this March. The decision to ship the premium expression was approved by Michter’s Master Distiller Dan McKee and Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson.
The comeback of this expression comes amid a significant renaissance for American rye whiskey, a category that has seen remarkable growth after years of being overlooked by consumers.

“When we began selling our rye many years ago, American rye whiskey was virtually an afterthought for a lot of people. Our team takes pride in our ryes, and it’s great to see how this category of wonderful whiskey has returned to the forefront,” said Michter’s President Joseph J. Magliocco.

Michter’s US*1 Barrel Strength Rye

Michter’s distinctive approach to rye whiskey follows the Kentucky style, featuring a mash bill that incorporates significant amounts of corn and malted barley alongside the majority rye grain content. This balanced grain bill creates a more approachable flavor profile compared to ryes with higher rye content.

“We often have people at a tasting that say they are not rye drinkers, but when they taste Michter’s they are surprised by how much they enjoy it,” McKee explained. “This Kentucky style rye at barrel strength is another fantastic way to enjoy the traditional characteristics of a rye whiskey while offering a nice balance of sweetness and spice.”

The 2025 release is bottled at an average proof of 110.5 (55.25% ABV) and will retail for approximately $120 (£92) per 750ml bottle in the United States.

Award-Winning Legacy

Wilson, speaking about the release, emphasized the expression’s complexity and refinement: “It is an absolute honor to share such a wonderful representation of what American rye can be with its baking spice, dark fruit, toffee, and fragrant citrus and floral notes all within a round, smooth, complex finish to be contemplated and savored.”

The release follows a significant achievement for the distillery. In October 2024, Michter’s became the first whiskey brand to be named “The World’s Most Admired Whiskey” by UK-based Drinks International for two consecutive years, as determined by an international panel of experts.

Michter’s portfolio includes bourbon, rye, sour mash whiskey, and American whiskey, with each limited-production offering aged to peak maturity according to the company’s quality standards. The distillery has built its reputation on traditional American whiskeys that emphasize quality over quantity.

The single-barrel US*1 Barrel Strength Rye represents one of the brand’s premium offerings in a category that continues to gain popularity among whisky enthusiasts.
