Last Drop's First Tequila: Ultra-Rare Extra Añejo Release
The Last Drop Distillers debuts ultra-rare extra añejo tequila with Release No. 40

The Last Drop Distillers has unveiled its 40th release and first-ever tequila; an ultra-rare extra añejo created by Carmen Villarreal of Casa San Matías. The limited release of 435 bottles worldwide marks a significant expansion for the luxury spirits curator into the tequila category.

The expression was crafted from three distinctive casks, including European oak, and aged for more than twice the minimum requirement for extra añejo classification.

Villarreal, who leads Casa San Matías in Jalisco’s Highlands, joins The Last Drop’s exclusive Assembly panel of spirits experts.

“For generations, Mexico’s most skilled tequileros have crafted spirits that capture the soul of the land,” said Carmen Villarreal. “I am immensely proud of the depth and elegance of this liquid. To see it selected by The Last Drop, and to contribute as a member of The Assembly to its release, is both humbling and inspiring.”

Casa San Matías, established in 1886, pioneered the extra añejo category with the world’s first expression in 1991. Villarreal assumed leadership of the family distillery in 1997 following her husband Don Jesús López Román’s passing.

The tequila combines 100% Blue Weber Agave from Jalisco’s red soils with innovative aging techniques. Two casks aged for ten years in ex-bourbon barrels were blended with one aged seven years in a port pipe.

Official tasting notes from the brand describe roasted nuts, tropical pineapple, vanilla, and floral notes of orange blossom and jasmine on the nose. The palate reveals dulce de leche, cooked agave, plums, dates, and warming spices of cinnamon and clove.

“Our goal has always been to uncover and share extraordinary spirits that might otherwise never have been tasted,” said Rebecca Jago, Director of Brand Experience at The Last Drop Distillers.

The 700ml bottles are individually numbered and signed by Villarreal. Each includes a handcrafted wooden case, 50ml miniature, tasting book, cork stopper, and wooden coasters.

The Last Drop Release No. 40 Extra Añejo Tequila launches through Sazerac’s distribution networks in November 2025 at $2,300 USD. Limited quantities will also be available through Legacy de Forge, Blockbar’s global spirits platform.

The release represents The Last Drop’s continued expansion beyond scotch whisky into global spirits categories, following previous releases of cognac, rum, and Japanese whisky.
