A multi-million-pound investment by Gordon & Macphail in Benromach Distillery concludes with the opening of a new 9,000-cask warehouse facility in Speyside.

Gordon & MacPhail Expands Maturation Capacity

Gordon & MacPhail has completed construction of Warehouse 10 at Benromach Distillery, marking the end of a significant infrastructure project. The new facility adds 472 square meters of storage space and increases the site’s maturation capacity by more than 25%.

The family-owned scotch whisky specialist worked with Robertson Construction Northern to build three new warehouses during this first expansion phase. The completed complex will store whisky from both Benromach Distillery and The Cairn Distillery, which Gordon & MacPhail also owns.

“At Gordon & MacPhail we are always thinking ahead to the future of the business,” said Jade Crotty, Head of Compliance & Infrastructure at Gordon & MacPhail. “Increasing our maturation capacity will allow us to continue to produce high-quality single malts across our portfolio of brands for decades to come.”

The racked warehouse can accommodate approximately 9,000 casks of Scotch whisky. This additional space arrives as demand for premium Scotch continues to grow globally, with exports reaching $6.7 billion (£5.3 billion) in 2024.

Benromach Distillery Site Prepares for Future Growth

The warehouse expansion represents part of Gordon & MacPhail’s broader investment strategy in the Moray region. The company has outlined plans for continued development across its properties, including both distillery sites and historic buildings.

Robertson Construction Northern, another family-owned local business, managed all three warehouse builds in the current expansion phase. Ian Phillips, Regional Managing Director at Robertson, noted the project brings “lasting benefit to the region through continued investment and growth.”

Beyond warehouse capacity, Gordon & MacPhail is renovating its historic South Street premises in Elgin. The refurbishment will create a new visitor experience showcasing the company’s heritage. During construction, the company opened The Courtyard, a temporary shop within Johnstons of Elgin, in March 2025.

Gordon & MacPhail operates as one of Scotland’s oldest independent bottlers, maturing and releasing some of the world’s rarest single malt whiskies. The company has maintained family ownership through four generations since its founding in 1895. It is now moving away from independent bottling, choosing to focus on the innovation at its distilleries: Benromach and The Cairn.

The completion of Warehouse 10 positions both Benromach Distillery and The Cairn Distillery to increase production volumes while maintaining traditional maturation methods. The expanded facility will support the company’s portfolio development for future decades.
