Glengoyne Mizunara Oak combines Highland tradition with Japanese oak influence in a limited 16-year-old expression

Scottish distiller Glengoyne has unveiled its latest limited-edition release. Glengoyne Mizunara Oak combines traditional Highland whisky-making with prized Japanese Mizunara oak casks in a 16-year-old expression priced at $395 (£300).

Mizunara Oak & Scottish Whisky

“We have travelled the world to find casks that enhance Glengoyne’s elegant, fruity character,” said Katy Muggeridge, Brand Director. Glengoyne Mizunara Oak has already secured recognition, winning a Double Gold Medal at the International Spirits Challenge 2025 before its official launch.

The new whisky represents the third release in the distillery’s Oak Masters’ Series, following last year’s White Oak expressions. For this release the whisky spent its first decade maturing in first-fill sherry and refill casks before six years of additional aging in rare Mizunara oak casks sourced from Japan’s Hokkaido region. The extended finish in Mizunara casks exceeds typical finishing periods used by most distilleries.

Mizunara, meaning “water oak,” has become increasingly sought-after in whisky production despite being notoriously difficult to work with due to its high moisture content and gnarled grain. The wood imparts distinctive flavors that have made Japanese whiskies using these casks highly prized among collectors.

Limited Release Numbers

With only 3,195 bottles available globally, the 53.4% ABV expression will be sold through specialist retailers, the Glengoyne website, and the distillery shop starting August 13, 2025.

The official tasting notes describe a nose of soft vanilla and sweet toffee with sandalwood and Japanese incense hints. The palate features warming spices, coconut, crisp green apples, and liquorice, while the finish is characterized as long and floral, reminiscent of cherry blossoms.

The packaging reflects the East-meets-West theme with Japanese Sumi-e style illustrations featuring a Mizunara oak tree and Glengoyne’s signature geese alongside a sunset scene.

Glengoyne, operating since 1833 near Glasgow, has partnered with the Wildlife and Wetland Trust to maintain an on-site wetland reserve. The distillery offers tours seven days a week and will include the Mizunara Oak in its Fine & Rare tasting experience. The release follows a broader expansion of Glengoyne’s portfolio, including travel retail exclusives like the 12-Year-Old First Fill Edition and 15-Year-Old PX Cask Edition, both part of the Spirit of Time collection available in duty-free shops.
