Scottish distillery Glen Moray has ventured into uncharted territory with the launch of two experimental single malts finished in Tequila barrels.
The Speyside producer released its Glen Moray Tequila Cask Finish and Glen Moray Peated Tequila Cask Finish on September 19th, marking the latest addition to its Warehouse 1 Collection.
Glen Moray Tequila Cask Finished Whiskies Bring Mexican Influence to Speyside
The two limited editions represent Glen Moray’s first experiment with Tequila cask maturation. Both expressions start with eight-year-old whisky aged in bourbon casks before finishing in tequila barrels. The distillery produced just 474 bottles of each variant.
Glen Moray Tequila Cask Finish carries a retail price of £85 (~$115), while the peated version costs £95 (~$130). Both are bottled at cask strength without chill filtration and maintain their natural color.
According to official tasting notes, the standard Tequila Cask Finish offers vanilla custard and currant aromas with earthy, herbal flavors including fresh thyme and citrus. The whisky finishes with spice notes that fade to aged leather and oak. It comes in at 55.2% ABV.
The Peated Tequila Cask Finish presents rose petals and dark chocolate on the nose with smoked thyme. Official tasting notes describe smooth, sweet flavors of roasted bananas and hazelnuts, ending with a long finish of burning embers. This variant is bottled at 58.5% ABV.
Warehouse 1 Collection Expands with Tequila Cask Finished Whiskies
The releases join Glen Moray’s experimental Warehouse 1 Collection, named after the Elgin distillery’s blue warehouse where craftsmen store their most innovative casks. The collection showcases the distillery’s approach to exploring how different wood types influence whisky flavor.
“With the innovative whiskies of our Warehouse 1 Collection, we invite whisky lovers to explore a raft of intriguing new flavours,” said Glen Moray Global Brand Ambassador Iain Allan. “And for this tenth release, we are celebrating our first-ever experiments with Tequila casks, resulting in two small-batch releases which take our smooth, fruity single malt to new heights.”
The Tequila barrel influence adds what the distillery describes as complex sweetness to Glen Moray’s typical smooth and fruity profile. The peated version explores how light smoke interacts with the Tequila cask character.
Both expressions target collectors and whisky enthusiasts seeking new flavor experiences. The distillery positions them as gift options for the holiday season.
The limited bottles are available through select specialist whisky retailers in the UK. Glen Moray continues its reputation for wood experimentation with these releases, though availability remains restricted to the initial 948-bottle run across both variants.
