Fuji Gotemba Distillery
Fuji Gotemba Distillery was established and commissioned in 1973 as part of a joint venture between Kirin Brewery, Seagram, and Chivas Brothers. The location of the distillery was chosen due to its similarities with the Scottish climate. Additionally, the snow melt from Mount Fuji provides crystal clear, high-quality water that is used to distill. The distillery was designed to combine the best of global distilling methods to produce fine Japanese whisky.
Since its establishment, Fuji Gotemba Distillery has been producing high-quality Japanese whiskies, many of which have been recognized by renowned spirit competitions such as the World Whiskies Awards.
Master Blender, Jota Tanaka, wanted to mark Fuji Gotemba’s 50th anniversary with a special expression that demonstrates the “pure and refined style” that has become associated with FUJI Whisky.
FUJI 50th Anniversary Single Malt
“To commemorate our distillery’s 50th anniversary, I meticulously hand selected malts and conducted nearly one hundred test blends to artfully craft this special edition whisky, a richly complex expression,” says Master Blender Jota Tanaka, the second only Master Blender in the distillery’s history. “Using malt from our inaugural distillate in 1973, while harmoniously blending malts from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, and 2010s, to truly honor and showcase the gift of Mt. Fuji through the decades.”
As such, the whisky inside the FUJI 50th Anniversary Single Malt ranges from 12 to 50 years of age, bringing together distillates from across Fuji’s history. The whiskies were matured in a combination of American white oak ex-bourbon, ex-beer, Spanish oak Oloroso sherry, and French oak red wine. The result is a rich, complex, and layered Japanese single malt.
