Whisky giant Diageo has revealed its annual Special Releases collection for 2025, featuring eight single malt scotch whiskies finished in unconventional casks ranging from volcanic rock-toasted oak to ex-mezcal barrels.

The Horizons Unbound collection marks a departure from traditional whisky-making methods, with experimental finishes designed to create unexpected flavor profiles in familiar spirits.

Master Blender Dr. Stuart Morrison curated the lineup to appeal to collectors seeking innovation and casual drinkers drawn to unique sensory experiences.

Diageo 2025 Special Releases Feature Volcanic Rock and Mezcal Casks

Among the most unusual offerings is Talisker 14 Year Old ‘Molten Seas,’ which represents a first for the Isle of Skye distillery. The whisky was matured in American oak casks toasted with volcanic rock, creating what the company describes as an innovative experiment in flavor development.

The Singleton of Glen Ord 17 Year Old ‘Into the Blue’ underwent finishing in both ex-mezcal and second-fill ex-sherry casks. According to official tasting notes, this process delivers bold spice notes alongside fruity richness.

Other expressions include Lagavulin 12 Year Old ‘Grain & Embers,’ which features a bakery-smoke character from Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso casks, and Oban 12 Year Old ‘Heart of the Harbour,’ offering toffee, citrus, and sea breeze notes from ex-bourbon American oak maturation.

Rare Releases and Distillery Firsts in Diageo 2025 Special Releases

The collection includes several limited productions and experimental techniques. Dailuaine 21 Year Old ‘Marbled Treasures’ represents a rare one-off release from the distillery, matured in Spanish ex-sherry casks. Official tasting notes describe dried fruit, baked apple, and fragrant spice flavors.

Clynelish 18 Year Old ‘Waxen Sun’ utilizes an early distillation ‘Pineapple Cut’ to create tropical and waxy characteristics. Roseisle 14 Year Old ‘Harmonic Grace’ combines refill and rejuvenated casks for added complexity.

Teaninich 8 Year Old ‘Daring Rye’ stands out as both a distillery first and an unusual category entry. This single grain Scotch whisky was produced using rye and Teaninich’s rare mash filter, then aged in ex-bourbon casks. The official notes highlight toffee sweetness with spice and herbal depth.

“Horizons Unbound invites whisky lovers to discover bold new takes on some of our most iconic Single Malts. It’s a taste of what happens when we challenge the concept of what whisky can be. This is a collection that proves exceptional whisky doesn’t just respect tradition – it redefines it,” says Dr. Stuart Morrison, Master Blender at Diageo.

The 2025 Special Releases collection is now available in limited quantities from specialist Scotch whisky retailers and malts.com.
