The Macallan Anniversary Malt was first released in 1983 as the world’s first distillery-released, vintage-dated 25-year-old single malt series.
Mark Littler, founder of the brokerage, said: “The Macallan Anniversary Malts are regarded by many as the most important whisky series ever released.”
He added: “When the Anniversary series was launched in 1983, single malt as a category was still relatively young. To release a structured, vintage-dated 25-year-old series at that moment was groundbreaking, and it’s not overreaching to suggest that it changed the trajectory of premium scotch whisky.”
The collection spans vintages distilled from the late 1950s to the mid-1970s, alongside all non-vintage editions released under the Anniversary Malt name.
Smeyers began her collection in the late 1990s following a trip to Scotland.
“I didn’t set out to build a complete set, I just fell in love with Macallan and that first Anniversary Malt epitomised their whisky for me,” said Smeyers. “Then one bottle led to another, and it quietly became a very enjoyable mission.”
A key feature of the collection is the condition of each bottle, which was a focus for Smeyers during the acquisition process.
Every bottle has an excellent fill level into the neck and is accompanied by its original presentation box.
“I was always very particular,” Smeyers explained. “I only bought bottles with excellent fill levels and original boxes. Because I never set out with the plan to own every bottle, when I did add something to the collection it always had to be the best example I could find.”
The rarity and condition make the set exceptionally difficult to replicate.
“In my entire career, and after handling hundreds of thousands of bottles, I have never seen a complete set of Macallan Anniversary Malts appear for sale,” Littler stated. “This is the only full set I am aware of anywhere in the world.”
He continued: “What makes this collection exceptional is not just completeness, but condition… it’s debatable whether it could be recreated at all.”
Smeyers decided to sell the collection after completing the set, viewing it as the natural conclusion to her collecting journey.
“Now the collection is complete there is a sense of satisfaction and it feels like the right moment to let it move on to someone else who will appreciate it,” she said.
