Clonakilty Distillery has become one of the few spirits producers worldwide to earn B Corporation certification, recognizing its commitment to environmental and social standards alongside business performance.

The County Cork distillery completed a rigorous assessment process examining its impact on workers, community, environment, and customers. The certification places Clonakilty among approximately 9,900 B Corps across 100 countries that meet strict sustainability and transparency requirements.

Clonakilty Sets New Standards for Sustainability

The distillery demonstrated leadership across multiple areas during the B Impact Assessment. Employee initiatives include health and wellness programs, comprehensive safety training, and new operational systems. Community engagement features local beach cleanups and participation in Tidy Towns efforts.

Environmental measures form a core part of the certification requirements. Clonakilty has mapped its complete carbon footprint, covering on-site energy consumption, supplier impacts, and delivery emissions. The distillery now operates under a structured emissions reduction plan.

Water and energy monitoring systems track resource usage while packaging reduction efforts minimize waste. Future projects under consideration include solar panel installation and constructed wetlands. A wildlife meadow planted with native species now supports local pollinators and habitat restoration at the distillery site.

Supply chain accountability extends throughout Clonakilty’s operations. The distillery evaluates all suppliers against governance and environmental protection standards. This comprehensive approach to business responsibility remains uncommon in the spirits sector.

“We’re delighted to be officially certified as a B Corp,” said Michael Scully, Founder of Clonakilty Distillery. “For us, this is recognition of the way we’ve always done things. We’ve worked hard to build a business that takes care of its people, respects the planet and supports our local community. Becoming a B Corp is a proud moment, but it’s also a promise to keep doing better every day.”

The Scully family established Clonakilty Distillery in 2016 after nine generations of farming the coastal land. The waterfront facility produces triple-distilled single pot still whiskeys using locally sourced ingredients. The distillery also manufactures vodka and gin alongside its whiskey portfolio.

B Corp Certification requires businesses to meet high standards set by the nonprofit organization B Lab. Companies undergo assessment every three years and must achieve minimum scores across five impact areas. Legal structure changes ensure long-term commitment to stakeholder interests beyond shareholders alone.

As consumer demand for sustainable products grows, B Corp status provides verified credentials for ethical business practices.

Clonakilty joins a select group of distilleries worldwide that have achieved this certification, signaling potential shifts in how the spirits industry approaches corporate responsibility and sustainability commitments.
