J.P. Wiser’s 24 Year Old Canadian Whisky has been named Canadian Whisky of the Year at the 16th annual Canadian Whisky Awards in Victoria, British Columbia. The blended whisky, part of J.P. Wiser’s Decades Series, received the top overall score from a panel of 13 judges who evaluated around 200 whiskies in blind tastings.

The ultra-premium expression was distilled in 2000 and aged for 24 years.

Judges noted the whisky displays fine oak spice and leather with butterscotch toffee and nougat.

“This solid old-timer brings the delicacy and refinement of long-aged whisky to the depth and nuance of a masterfully blended dram,” said Davin de Kergommeaux, chair of the judging panel and author of Canadian Whisky: The Essential Portable Expert.

He added: “Among so many brilliant whiskies in competition, it was a clear winner.”

The awards ceremony took place on January 15 during the Victoria Whisky Festival, with 47 Canadian whisky producers receiving honors.

Wayne Gretzky Distillery’s Maple Cask Whisky won Blended Whisky of the Year, while BEARFACE Triple Oak took Corn Whisky of the Year.

Wild Life Distillery’s WLD Cask King of the North earned Rye Whisky of the Year honors.

Macaloney’s Distillery claimed Single Malt Whisky of the Year for The Peat Project: Harvest Coast and also won the Award of Excellence in Product Innovation for The Peat Project series.

Sons of Vancouver Distillery was named Canadian Whisky Producer of the Year and won Best Cask Strength Whisky for ‘The First Crack of a Crème Brûlée’ Cask-Strength Wheated Rye.

Pike Creek 22 Year Old PX Cask Finish Canadian Whisky received Best Limited Expression.

Bill Ashburn of Forty Creek was presented with the Canadian Whisky Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Canadian Whisky Awards, held annually since 2010, operates independently from the Canadian whisky industry and only considers whiskies distilled and matured in Canada.
