Buffalo Trace Distillery has unveiled a new 100-proof version of its flagship Sazerac Rye whiskey, targeting bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts who demand higher-strength spirits for mixed drinks. The Kentucky-based distillery developed the expression in response to growing industry demand for ryes that deliver more flavor and structure in cocktails.
The new release marks Buffalo Trace’s latest move to capitalize on the resurgence of rye whiskey in American bars. At 50% ABV, the whiskey offers 10 proof points more than the standard Sazerac Rye, providing what the company describes as “enhanced flavor, versatility and control in cocktail creation”.
Sazerac Rye 100 Proof Targets Professional Bartenders
The distillery specifically engineered this expression for use in classic cocktails like the Sazerac and Manhattan. According to official tasting notes, the whiskey features aromas of clove, vanilla, anise, and pepper, with candied spices and citrus on the palate, finishing with hints of licorice.
“As the whiskey of America’s first cocktail, Sazerac Rye has played a central role in rye whiskey’s resurgence,” said Andrew Duncan, Global Brand Director at Buffalo Trace Distillery. “Bartenders have increasingly embraced 100 proof ryes for the balance, strength and versatility they provide. Sazerac Rye 100 Proof offers greater control over flavor and balance, empowering creativity behind the bar. It’s built to be the perfect cocktail whiskey.”
Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley led the development process, focusing on maintaining the whiskey’s signature profile while adding complexity through the higher proof point. The distillery conducted extensive testing to ensure the elevated alcohol content complemented rather than overwhelmed the spirit’s characteristic flavors.
Sazerac Rye Expands Barrel Select Program
Buffalo Trace has incorporated the new expression into its Sazerac Barrel Select program, allowing qualifying accounts to hand-pick their own single barrels. The first 100 on-premise accounts to participate will receive commemorative barrelheads for display.
The whiskey launched on July 1, 2025, with distribution through Sazerac’s United States networks. Retail pricing is set at $29.99 for a one-liter bottle, though taxes and fees will vary by market.
The release comes as rye whiskey continues its decade-long revival in American drinking culture. Category sales have grown steadily since 2015, driven largely by cocktail-focused consumption in urban markets. Industry data shows bartenders increasingly prefer higher-proof ryes for their ability to maintain flavor profiles when mixed with other ingredients.
The distillery, owned by Sazerac Company, has expanded production capacity in recent years to meet growing demand for premium American whiskeys.
The standard 90-proof Sazerac Rye remains in production alongside the new 100-proof variant. Both expressions use the same mash bill and aging process, with proof being the primary differentiator between the two products.
