Best Scotch Whiskies for Burns Night 2024 Celebrations

Speyside distillery Benriach and Highland producer The Glendronach are showcasing their respective 12-year-old single malt Scotch whiskies ahead of Burns Night. The expressions are being promoted for the global celebration of Scottish poet Robert Burns, which takes place annually on January 25.

Burns Night traditionally centers on a supper of haggis, poetry recitals, and Scotch whisky. The distilleries, inspired by Burns’ own works like the 1785 poem Scotch Drink, selected these whiskies for the quintessentially Scottish celebration.

Benriach The Twelve is a Speyside single malt bottled at 46% ABV. The expression is presented with natural cask-imparted color.

Official notes from the brand describe a nose of “rich maple honey, cocoa and baked forest fruit.” The palate features “maraschino cherry, baked orange and hazelnut, with a lingering sultana and spiced mocha finish.”

From the Highlands, The Glendronach 12 Year Old serves as the distillery’s flagship expression. It is handcrafted using saxophone-shaped copper pot stills.

The whisky is bottled at 43% ABV and also has a natural color. Both the Benriach and The Glendronach brands are owned by US-based spirits company Brown-Forman.

According to the brand, the whisky has a nose of “sherried autumn fruits” with “smooth chocolate praline, gingerbread and sun-dried raisin.” The palate offers notes of “caramelized bramble, silky orange and sultana” with a warming spice.

The Glendronach also suggested a ‘Bramble Sour’ cocktail serve for the occasion, combining the 12-year-old expression with dry vermouth, agave, citrus, and egg white.

Both Benriach The Twelve and The Glendronach 12 Year Old are available from retailers including The Whisky Shop. Each bottle has a suggested retail price of £49.50.
