Ballantine’s 40 Year Old Masterclass Collection: Chapter Two ‘The Waiting’

The five chapters in the Ballantine’s 40 Year Old Masterclass Collection pay homage to the five Ballantine’s Master Blenders that have overseen the production of this world-renowned scotch. Chapter Two ‘The Waiting’ is inspired by an essential ingredient in whisky making: patience, which is particularly important when creating a high age statement scotch.

Master Blender, Sandy Hyslop, drew on his experiences as an apprentice under former Master Blender, Jack Goudy. Goudy himself laid down the casks that have been used to create the 40 year old blend, with the whisky being matured in American oak casks for four decades.

The resulting whisky, bottled at 45.4% ABV, “is an opulent and complex whisky, with smooth sweet tones and a hint of gentle smoke,” according to a brand press release.

“Time brings distinction to a whisky, but it also brings huge responsibility. You need a combination of patience, passion and dedication to meticulously monitor and nose hundreds of samples a day to pinpoint the exact moment that a flavour profile has reached its maximum potential,” said Hyslop. “It has to be exactly right because there’s no turning back the clock! Jack Goudy taught me how to play the long game, and I’m repeating these lessons to my own team to preserve the stature and legacy of Ballantine’s for many years to come.”

Ballantine’s 40 Year Old Masterclass Collection: Chapter Two ‘The Waiting’ is presented in individually numbered bottles which, in turn, are housed in a sleek presentation box. Scottish artist, Kyla McCallum created a 3D paper art piece for the inside of the box, which each chapter featuring a different design.
