Jamaica’s oldest distillery sets new benchmark with ultra-rare 51 year old rum as premium spirits market expands beyond traditional whiskey categories.
Historic Jamaican Rum
Appleton Estate has announced the release of The Source 51-Year-Old, the longest tropically aged rum ever produced, marking a significant moment for the premium spirits industry. The 275-year-old Jamaican distillery will release just 25 decanters of the expression, at $70,000 in the US. Just three will be available in the UK through Berry Bros & Rudd at £59,320.

The single marque rum was distilled on July 30, 1973, and aged exclusively in Jamaica’s tropical climate in a single American oak cask. Originally overseen by Master Blender Owen Tulloch, the project was entrusted to Dr. Joy Spence, who has overseen the maturation of this ground-breaking release for the last forty years.

“Tasting this beautiful expression with Owen over 40 years ago sparked my lifelong passion for the possibilities of aged rum,” said Dr. Spence. “This release is a tribute to the artistry, dedication, and spirit of our people; from the hand-harvested cane and traditional distillation to the stewardship of our barrels across generations.”
Premium Rum Challenges Luxury Whiskey Market
The release represents a strategic move as rum producers increasingly compete with established whiskey brands in the ultra-premium spirits segment. Tropical aging accelerates maturation by an estimated factor of 2-3 compared to cooler climates, though it also increases evaporation rates through what distillers traditionally call the “angel’s share,” although the accelerated losses experienced in tropical aging is also referred to as the “devil’s share.”
Official tasting notes describe The Source as having a dark copper color with green aging rings, with honeyed raisins and cinnamon on the nose. The palate offers powerful citrus with spicy raisins and rich oak, finishing with oak, spice, and hints of ginger.
Each heart-shaped decanter features a copper rendition of Jamaica’s national bird, the Doctor Bird, and comes housed in a turquoise case with straw marquetry inspired by pressed sugar cane. The presentation reflects the growing importance of packaging in the luxury spirits market, where collectors increasingly value both liquid and vessel.
Appleton Estate maintains one of the world’s largest rum inventories with over 150,000 aging barrels. The distillery, owned by Campari Group, continues to expand its premium offerings alongside its core range, which includes expressions aged from 8 to 21 years.
To mark the release, Appleton Estate will sponsor the Jamaica Art Society’s 2026-2027 In Focus Fellowship, supporting Jamaican artists and curators through dinners, sponsorships, and cultural experiences.
The Source will be available from September 2025, joining an increasingly competitive ultra-premium spirits market where age statements and provenance command significant premiums across rum, whiskey, and other categories.
