Tobermory Distillery has released the fifth and final expression in its exclusive Hebridean Series, completing a collection that has garnered multiple International Wine & Spirit Competition accolades since its first launch in 2021. The latest release is a Tobermory 27 year old sherried single malt with only 2,857 bottles available globally, making it the rarest in the collection.
Priced at £395, the expression became available worldwide on March 12 after a brief exclusivity period with Berry Bros. & Rudd.
Tobermory 27 Year Old Hebridean Series Expression 5
This concluding expression draws inspiration from Duart Castle, an iconic landmark on the Mull skyline that has guided seafarers since the 13th century. The connection to farewells makes it a fitting muse for the series finale.
“The Hebridean Series is a collection of sherried single malt whiskies, which showcase the magic and diverse character of Mull,” said Julieann Fernandez, Master Blender at Tobermory Distillery. “Each expression in the series offers a unique balance of spice, oak and rich flavor, shaped by time and the wonderfully unpredictable nature of maturation.”
Fernandez notes how the collection demonstrates the impact of extended aging, from the “smooth vanilla and honeyed layers” of earlier releases to the “treacle-toffee richness” of this final 27-year-old expression.
Tasting Notes and Heritage
The distillery describes this rich sherried malt as featuring signature Tobermory notes of pineapple and toffee caramel alongside marmalade, cinnamon spice, and the sweetness of fig rolls and honey-roasted nuts.
On the nose, aromas of cinnamon, pastries, and dark black fruits lead into sweet apricot, dried figs, and toasted oak with a bright orange zest finish. The palate delivers thick marmalade and warming cinnamon, fig rolls, blackcurrant, brambles, and honey-roasted nuts with hints of treacle toffee.
Rob Whitehead, Spirits Buyer at Berry Bros. & Rudd, reflected on the partnership: “Very few single malt producers pre-date Tobermory, which was established in 1798, the year our own business celebrated our first centenary, and even fewer can boast a whisky-making team as talented as that working at Tobermory under Julieann Fernandez. With centuries of delicious whiskies distilled, bottled and poured, and notwithstanding the rich vein of form currently being enjoyed, it may even be that the best is yet to come.”
For those who have collected the entire Hebridean Series, this final release completes a journey spanning 125 years of whisky craftsmanship. Each bottle in the series has been inspired by a different aspect of Tobermory’s island home, from croft to castle, sky to shore.
The Tobermory 27 Year Old is now available from selected specialist retailers and directly from Tobermory Distillery both in-person and through their online store.
