Max Homa: From Golf Course to Rickhouse

Homa, known for both his golf skills and sense of humor, has been vocal about his preference for Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel, calling it his “hands-down favorite” bourbon.

“Since the beginning of my partnership with Elijah Craig, fans have been asking for a barrel pick,” said Homa. “All of the barrels I sampled were delicious which made the decision very difficult, but in the end my Toasted Barrel pick ultimately stood out with its rich creamy notes of butterscotch and vanilla alongside the classic oak smokiness and spice Elijah Craig is known for.”

The collaboration gave Homa a chance to step into the distiller’s role for a day, working directly with Elijah Craig Master Distiller Conor O’Driscoll to evaluate multiple barrel options.

A High-Proof, High-Standard Selection

What separates this release from standard Elijah Craig offerings is both its unique maturation process and impressive proof point. The selected bourbon begins as Elijah Craig Small Batch before receiving additional aging in a custom toasted barrel.

The Homa selection follows this same double-barrel process but uses uncut, barrel-proof bourbon. His chosen barrel aged for eight years on the fifth floor of Heaven Hill’s Rickhouse M before spending an additional six months finishing on the fifth floor of Warehouse H1.

The resulting whiskey comes in at a robust 126.6 proof (63.3% ABV), significantly higher than the standard Elijah Craig Small Batch’s 94 proof.

Tasting Notes and Availability

According to the press release, this bourbon offers “a depth of flavor that begins with the unmistakable aroma of toasted oak and sweet caramel.” The finish is described as “warm and satisfying, with lingering hints of chocolate and baking spices.”

The release is exclusively available to residents of California, Homa’s home state, making it a particularly special offering for local fans of both golf and premium bourbon.

Interested customers can sign up on the Elijah Craig website to receive a notification when the product becomes available for purchase. The company notes that joining the list doesn’t guarantee purchase, as bottles will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.
