Johnnie Walker has unveiled what stands as one of its most exceptional releases to date – a 52-year-old blended Scotch whisky that brings together liquid from five legendary ghost distilleries. Limited to just 200 bottles, this ultra-premium release showcases Master Blender Emma Walker’s first venture into the ultra-rare category, with an MSRP of $25,000 (£23,500).

A Symphony of Silent Stills

The remarkable blend features eight carefully selected whiskies, including single grains from the silent stills of Cambus (closed 1993) and Caresebridge (closed 1983). These historic grain components contribute distinctive notes of butterscotch, spice and menthol to the expression, laying the foundation for what promises to be an extraordinary whisky experience. The inclusion of these grain whiskies from shuttered distilleries adds not only to the liquid’s complexity but also to its historical significance in Scotland’s distilling heritage.

Legacy in the Glass

The single malt portion of the blend reads like a who’s who of lost Scottish distilling history. Ghost distillery contributions include prized liquid from Glenury Royal, Glenlochy, Glen Albyn and Brora, with currently operational Dalwhinnie rounding out the prestigious selection. Each closed distillery represents a unique chapter in Scotland’s whisky story, with some dating their closure back to the challenging 1980s period of industry consolidation.

“Alongside my small team of whisky experts, we hand-selected some of our oldest and most precious casks of Highland single malt and Lowland single grain whiskies for my first ultra-rare release as master blender,” explains Emma Walker, Johnnie Walker’s Master Blender. “With this deceptively simple cask combination, our intention was to create a new, masterful blend in homage to our founders’ achievements.”

A Complex Flavor Journey

The 41.2% ABV expression delivers an intricate flavor profile that showcases the distinct characteristics of each component. The Glenury Royal and Glenlochy components bring notes of berries and confectionary fruit, while Glen Albyn and Dalwhinnie contribute salinity, cured meat and cacao characteristics. The legendary Brora adds its signature soft smoke along with blue cheese notes and deep complexity, creating a masterful harmony of flavors that speaks to both the age and quality of the whiskies involved.

While the youngest whisky in the blend carries the 52-year age statement, older liquids are present in the mix, though specific ages remain undisclosed. This practice is standard in the industry, where age statements reflect the youngest component in any blend.

The release represents a significant milestone for Johnnie Walker, adding to their portfolio of ultra-aged expressions while paying tribute to Scotland’s rich distilling heritage. This collector’s piece is currently available through Diageo private client services and select luxury retailers globally, offering whisky enthusiasts a rare opportunity to own a piece of Scotch whisky history.
