Glengoyne Highland Single Malt has announced the release of its Winter Solstice expression, the second bottling in its exclusive Solstice Series. Limited to just 285 bottles globally, this rare release is available exclusively to members of the Glengoyne Family.
Artistic Creation Meets Whisky Making
The Winter Solstice expression emerged from an innovative year-long project that captured the sun’s influence on whisky maturation. The distillery installed 12 pinhole cameras throughout its grounds, creating solargraphy images that tracked the sun’s path across the sky through Scotland’s changing seasons.

Distillery Manager Robbie Hughes personally selected a European Oak Sherry Hogshead (Cask No. 1366) for this release. The 16-year-old single malt is bottled at 59.9% ABV and showcases what Hughes describes as “a harmony of winter flavours.”
“As the shortest day of the year approaches, so does a moment of reflection and celebration with Glengoyne’s Winter Solstice expression,” Hughes said. “Everything we do at Glengoyne, we do with patience, dedication and the understanding that perfection takes time.”
A Winter Profile
The expression delivers a sophisticated flavor profile fitting for the season. On the nose, it presents luxurious vanilla and treacle sponge pudding notes, complemented by chewy toffee, dark chocolate, and freshly toasted oak. Additional layers of thyme, dried fruits, and stewed peach round out the aromatic experience.
The palate offers bright berries and dried fruits, accompanied by sweet tropical notes and chopped almonds. A rich foundation of homemade Christmas cake soaked in oloroso sherry provides depth, while hints of clove and roast coffee add complexity to the finish.
Limited Availability
The Winter Solstice will be available for purchase starting December 16 at 3:44 PM, symbolically timed with sunset, ahead of the winter solstice on December 21. Priced at £275 ($348), the release will be available to Glengoyne Family members across the UK, Germany, Sweden, France, Austria, Netherlands, and Belgium.
This release follows the Summer Solstice expression, which sold out within hours of its launch earlier this year. Whisky enthusiasts interested in future releases can join the Glengoyne Family through the distillery’s website.
The Winter Solstice edition continues Glengoyne’s tradition of unhurried whisky-making, reflecting the distillery’s reputation for being Scotland’s slowest distilled whisky.
