Blended malt doesn’t have to mean compromise. At Wemyss Malts, blending is an art form treated as a way to amplify flavour, not flatten it. Over the past two decades, this independent, family-owned company has built a reputation for characterful whiskies that put taste first, from single cask gems to its flavour-led core range.

READ THE STORYWe spoke with Kirsty MacKinnon, Senior Brand Manager at Wemyss Malts, to explore how the brand’s philosophy has evolved over 20 years, why blending can be just as expressive as single malts, and how Wemyss is thinking about the future of scotch in an ever-changing world.
What Is Wemyss Malts?
Wemyss Malts is a family-owned whisky company crafting small-batch blended malts that focus on flavour rather than age or region. Founded in 2005 by William and Isabella Wemyss, the brand is part of Wemyss Family Spirits, alongside Kingsbarns Distillery and Darnley’s Gin.
Blending is led by Isabella Wemyss, who brings a precise and thoughtful approach to cask selection and flavour composition. Drawing on the family’s heritage in tea blending and winemaking, each release is carefully constructed to deliver balance, character, and consistency.
The core range highlights three distinct styles: The Hive (sweet and honeyed), Spice King (bold and aromatic), and Peat Chimney (subtle and smoky). Each is made entirely from single malts and designed to showcase the diversity of scotch whisky.
An Evolving Approach
1. As Wemyss Family Spirits celebrates its 20th anniversary, how has the company’s philosophy evolved from those early single cask bottlings to today’s broader range of blended malts and spirits?
When Wemyss Family Spirits was founded in 2005, our focus was on selecting and bottling exceptional single casks of scotch whisky. Each cask was chosen for its distinctive character and individuality, and we took great pride in presenting those whiskies under evocative names that reflected their unique flavour profiles. Our approach from the outset was rooted in approachability, transparency, and a deep respect for the diversity of scotch whisky.

Twenty years on, that core philosophy remains unchanged: we are still led by flavour, driven by quality, and committed to craft. What has evolved is the breadth of our offering.
In addition to single casks, we now produce a core range of blended malts, a high-malt blended scotch, and a number of limited editions. Each of these allows us to showcase the artistry of blending, an often underappreciated craft, and to bring consistent, flavour-led experiences to a wider audience.
Inside The Wemyss Malts Core Range
2. Your blended malts have carved out a distinctive place in the market. What inspired the move from independent bottlings to creating a core range, and how do you maintain consistency while showcasing character?
The transition from solely independent bottlings to a core range of blended malts was a natural evolution.
Over time, we developed a deep understanding of cask character, regional styles, and the potential of combining malts to create harmony. We wanted to offer something permanent, whiskies that consumers could return to time and again, while still capturing the individuality that defined our single casks.
Our core range: The Hive, Spice King, and Peat Chimney was born out of this idea. Each expression is crafted to represent a distinct flavour profile: honeyed sweetness, warming spice, and gentle smoke, respectively. Their names are designed to reflect their character, rather than conventional regional or age cues, continuing our mission to make whisky more accessible without compromising depth.

Consistency across batches is ensured by the work of our Production Director, Isabella Wemyss, who oversees every blend and hand-selects each cask. We use a broad palette of single malts (up to eight in some expressions) and carefully adjust the recipe to maintain profile fidelity, always bottling at 46% ABV, natural colour and non-chill-filtered.
Once blended, the whisky is married in oak casks to allow the flavours to integrate fully and develop additional depth before bottling.
At the same time, we never seek uniformity at the expense of soul – each expression must retain the character and individuality that define Wemyss Malts.
The Future of Wemyss Malts
3. Looking ahead, how do you see Wemyss Family Spirits adapting to emerging trends, particularly with the growing interest in whisky-based RTDs and new formats of enjoying scotch?
As a family-owned and independently operated company, we have the agility to explore emerging trends while staying true to our roots.
The growing interest in whisky-based RTDs is certainly one we are watching with interest. We see this not as a dilution of scotch’s heritage, but as an opportunity to introduce whisky to new audiences in more accessible and contemporary ways.
That said, any move we make into this space, or others, must be done with integrity. If we were to develop a whisky-based RTD, it would be crafted with the same care and flavour-led principles as our bottled whiskies. We would never release anything that didn’t uphold the quality and character that define Wemyss.
More broadly, we are actively exploring how our whiskies can be enjoyed in new settings – from highball serves and cocktails to food pairings and experiential tastings. Engaging with the on-trade has been a key focus of mine: working closely with bartenders and chefs to demonstrate the versatility of our spirits and to demystify scotch for the next generation of drinkers.
As we look ahead to the next twenty years, we intend to balance innovation with heritage, always anchoring new ideas in the values that have defined Wemyss Family Spirits since the very beginning.
