Ten of the Best: Long Aged Stunners from the Gordon & MacPhail Private Collection

The Private Collection from Gordon & MacPhail represents one of the most prestigious series ever released by an independent Scotch whisky bottler. Comprising rare single cask and small-batch releases, the range showcases some of the oldest and most remarkable spirits ever matured in Scotland.

Now in its 131st year, Gordon & MacPhail was founded in 1895 by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail in Elgin. Over more than a century, the company has earned global respect for its patient maturation philosophy and unrivalled cask inventory. In 1998, the firm achieved a lifelong ambition by reopening and operating its own distillery, Benromach, which had previously fallen silent in 1983.

The Emergence of the Private Collection

The Private Collection first appeared in the early 1990s, released in extremely limited quantities. The inaugural bottling – a remarkable Mortlach 1942 50 Year Old – set the tone for everything that followed. Distilled on New Year’s Eve 1942 and bottled in January 1993, just 24 bottles were drawn from refill sherry butt No. 873.

Since then, each release has been personally selected by members of the Urquhart family, who have guided the business across four generations. Their hands-on involvement ensures every bottling reflects decades of accumulated knowledge in cask selection and long-term maturation.

Over the years, special editions have commemorated historic occasions, including royal celebrations such as The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and The Coronation of King Charles III, alongside curated releases like The Recollection Series.

What Makes the Private Collection Special?

From its inception, the Private Collection has served as a showcase for Gordon & MacPhail’s rarest and most exceptional casks. Many releases exceed fifty years of maturation, offering a glimpse into whisky history rarely accessible to collectors.

Most bottlings are long-aged single malts sourced from highly respected, lesser-known, or even closed distilleries. The range has evolved visually over time, most notably with the 2018 redesign introducing elegant decanters and substantial oak presentation cases that reflect the rarity of the liquid within.

Key Characteristics and Origins:

  • Family-Driven Selection – Chosen by directors and specialists from the Urquhart family, maintaining a deeply personal approach.
  • Exceptional Maturation – Vintage, long-aged whiskies, often bottled from single casks at natural strength.
  • Preservation of Whisky History – Many releases originate from closed distilleries or surviving casks from bygone production eras.
  • Experimental Wood Policy – Diverse maturation styles, including rare sherry casks, wine finishes, and extended secondary ageing.
  • Ultra-Premium Positioning – Extremely limited releases presented as collector-grade luxury bottlings.
