Johnnie Walker is one of the best-known names in scotch whisky. In 2025, the brand added a new expression to its core range: Johnnie Walker Black Label Ruby. It is a permanent addition, crafted to bring out sweet, fruit-forward flavors with the smooth style the brand is famous for.

If you have never heard of it before, you are not alone. Here are five simple things to know about Johnnie Walker Black Ruby.

Johnnie Walker Black Label Ruby Is the Newest Core Release

Johnnie Walker Black Ruby is the latest addition to the brand’s permanent range. It was launched in 2025 and created by Master Blender Dr. Emma Walker. The idea was to take the smooth character of Black Label and give it a sweeter, fruit-driven twist.

The name “Ruby” points to the whisky’s flavor profile. Expect notes of raspberry jam, plums, figs, and dark berries, balanced with honey and a touch of smoke. The smoke is lighter than in the standard Black Label, making the fruit flavors stand out more clearly.

This approachable style makes Black Ruby ideal for newcomers to scotch. It is also interesting for long-time fans who want to explore a modern take on the classic Black Label blend.

Black Ruby Is Made With a Unique Cask Selection

Black Ruby is a blended scotch whisky made from malt and grain whiskies from across Scotland. What sets it apart is the cask selection. The blend includes whiskies matured in red wine casks, Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, and ex-bourbon barrels.

Each type of cask adds something different. Wine casks bring rich berry flavors. Sherry casks layer on dried fruits and spice. Bourbon barrels add vanilla and caramel. Together, they create the sweet and smooth style that defines Black Ruby.

Unlike the 12-year-old Black Label, Ruby does not carry an age statement. Instead, it relies on these cask finishes to deliver depth, character, and a bold fruit-forward taste.

Black Ruby Can Be Enjoyed Neat, on Ice, or in Cocktails

Black Ruby is designed to be versatile. You can sip it neat to enjoy the full burst of berry sweetness and gentle smoke. If you prefer a softer flavor, try it over ice. The cold and dilution make the whisky lighter and more refreshing.

Johnnie Walker also highlights Black Ruby as a cocktail-friendly scotch. Its sweet, fruit-forward style holds up well when mixed. Popular serves include the Black Ruby Sour, made with lemon juice, honey syrup, and blackberry jam.

Another option is the Black Ruby Tonic, which pairs the whisky with tonic water, citrus, and a spoonful of jam.

For something richer, the Black Ruby Bramble combines the whisky with lemon and berry syrup for a dessert-like drink.

Black Ruby Is Available in the UK and the U.S.

Black Label Ruby first appeared in duty-free shops, but it is now rolling out more widely. In the UK, it is available at whisky retailers and online stores for around £40 to £45 for a 700ml bottle. The price puts it in line with Double Black.

In the U.S., distribution is still limited in early 2025. Some bottles can be found through travel retail and select online sellers. A 750ml bottle costs about $45 to $50. Wider availability is expected as the year goes on.

Black Ruby Offers a Sweeter Alternative to Black Label and Double Black

Johnnie Walker now has three whiskies in its Black Label family: Black Label, Double Black, and Black Ruby. Each offers a different style.

Black Label is the classic 12-year-old blend. It is smooth, balanced, and versatile, with gentle smoke and fruit. Double Black is bolder, with heavier peat and charred oak influence. It is aimed at drinkers who enjoy strong smoky flavors.

Black Label Ruby goes in the other direction. It reduces the smoke and highlights sweet red fruits, jammy notes, and honey. This makes it approachable for newcomers and appealing to those who prefer smoother, sweeter whiskies.
