Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon
BUY NOW: $39
I would put good money on most people not realizing that Woodford is triple-distilled whiskey. It isn’t something they scream about if I’m being honest, the whisky speaks for itself.
Filling up the speed rails, supermarket shelves, and specialist whisky shop shelf spaces, Woodford has dominated all the markets in which it has found itself. As a bourbon, it does everything you could want from the style. It is sweet, spicy, creamy, easy to find, and very affordable. Just like any bar, a list of triple-distilled whiskey would be incomplete without it.
Hazelburn Single Malt
BUY NOW: $244 (15 Year Old Oloroso Cask Matured)
Are we ready for the elephant in the room? Triple-distilled scotch whisky isn’t an impossible thing to find. Auchentoshan Distillery releases it all the time, and BenRiach and Benromach release some on occasion. However, the lesser-known and sometimes impossible-to-find release is from Hazelburn.
Part of the Springbank Distillery portfolio, it is a triple-distilled liquid that, in the most recent releases, has been very sherry-focused. Drinkers can still expect a little Springbank funkiness from it, but it drinks a little cleaner and is still a unicorn to find.
Chances are you’ll have to sample swap with a friend or see one behind a bar to actually get to try it. Either way though, add it to the list
Midleton Very Rare Irish Blended Whiskey
BUY NOW: $200
It is impossible not to talk about Midleton Very Rare when chatting about triple-distilled Irish whiskey. You could argue that this is the king of the ‘triple-distilled’ style.
A blend of triple-distilled single pot still (Redbreast/Spot Series) and triple-distilled single grain whiskeys – Midleton Very Rare has been a premium blend from its initial release back in 1984.
This year (2024) was their 40th anniversary which saw some pretty remarkable releases from the Irish whiskey giant. However, next year should be a little quieter for them, which hopefully means you can get your hands on a bottle of Very Rare a little easier.
Auchentoshan Single Malt
BUY NOW: $30
Where has Auchentoshan been over the past year? Once a very common brand, its bottles have become surprisingly hard to find, even at the entry level. Could a rebrand and relaunch be on the horizon? With the thriving development of other Glasgow-based distilleries, it wouldn’t come as a shock.
Auchentoshan has long been the go-to bottle for triple-distilled fans who prefer Scotch. Known for its softer, sweeter style of single malt, it delivers impressive grassy and citrus notes. For something a little richer, the Three Wood release, bottled at 43%, is worth exploring. Heavily influenced by Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks, it’s bursting with flavors that are bursting with Christmas time.
Redbreast 18 Year Old
BUY NOW: $22
The newest addition to the Redbreast range is an age statement that resonates strongly with many drinkers. With the rising cost of the Redbreast 21 Year Old, this release offers a welcome alternative at a more accessible price point, particularly as older Irish whiskeys have become increasingly scarce.
This expression leans more heavily on sherry influences than the 15 Year Old, showcasing incredible notes of chocolate spread and hazelnut. Despite this richer profile, it retains the classic creamy Redbreast character, complete with a lively flourish of pepper and creamed barley on the finish. A very elegant triple-distilled product.
The Liberty Distillery Whiskies
BUY NOW: $64.99
Canadian whisky is experiencing a remarkable renaissance, with distilleries pushing boundaries through experimental use of rye grains, innovative cask types, and a shift away from traditional methods. It’s a category well worth your attention.
The Liberty Distillery in Vancouver produces a wide range of triple-distilled whiskies. They have a single grain, rye, and currently a Madeira single cask on offer from the distillery shop.
The only downside is that they can only ship domestically. Writing this from the UK is quite painful as there are some incredible Canadian whiskies I’d love to get my hands on, but for some reason, the importing of these liquids in any way rarely makes it over the Atlantic.
The English Triple Distilled Whisky
BUY NOW: $69
As English whisky explores bigger and bolder horizons, it’s fitting to start with the pioneer of the modern era. The English Whisky Distillery in Norfolk began production around seventeen years ago and is still going strong. While their master distiller favors a lighter, triple-distilled spirit, most of their stock is double-distilled. However, they’re known for their experimental approach.
Their triple-distilled bottling offers a fruity, creamy, and sweet style of English whisky, typically matured in ex-bourbon casks. It’s an easy-drinking option and a perfect introduction to the world of English whisky.
