Review: The Balvenie Fifty Collection First Edition 50 Year Old

Jeff Whisky samples The Balvenie Fifty Collection First Edition, celebrating 50 year of craftsmanship at The Balvenie Distillery.

Tasting Notes:

About:
This is the first installment in The Balvenie Fifty Collection, celebrating 50 years of craftsmanship at The Balvenie Distillery. This 50 Year Old whisky was matured in a European oak refill butt for 50 years and bottled from single cask #8720 at 52.3% ABV.
Appearance:
Close to mahogany in colour with a thick viscosity leading the beads of malt to drip slowly down the glass.
Nose:
Instantly hit with a strong aroma of hazelnuts and rich cocoa powder. Plenty of dark juicy fruit notes such as cherries and blackberries coming through with some tantalizing spices. Warming apple pie and strawberry jam are also present in this thick aroma.
Palate:
A remarkable creamy and rich texture which shows no sign of the higher 52% abv. Dark chocolate follows the nose with sweeter almost chewy notes of marshmallows and toffee swirling in the mouth. Subtle notes of orange and honey roasted cashew nuts leave each sip asking for more.
Finish:
A deep long finish with plenty of slight bitter oak holding in the mouth for an age after each visit. On the final exhale there is a sweetness tied in with ginger and cinnamon with a fresh close to peppermint finale.
Comments:
While a long maturation doesn’t guarantee a greater product, this whisky certainly embraces the softer notes of age while retaining plenty of dynamic flavours to explore. This is an “experience whisky” which I am grateful to have enjoyed and savored.

The Balvenie Fifty Collection First Edition, 1973 50 Year Old

This is the first edition in The Balvenie‘s new, premium Fifty Collection, celebrating 50 year of craftsmanship at The Balvenie Distillery. You can read all of the details about this whisky, as well as the future releases here.

What Makes The Balvenie Fifty Collection First Edition a Collector’s Piece?

The Balvenie has become a serious contender for ‘ultra-pemium’ category leads. The distillery has plenty of entry-level, available bottles. It also has an interesting collection in its Stories Series that features peated stocks, Caroni rum cask finishes, and full European oak maturations – all with fun little twists on them. But when it comes to older stocks, and in this case seriously old stocks, The Balvenie is leading the way in official bottlings.

This whisky, age-wise wise still pales in comparison to their sixty-year-old release – but with this being a series of bottle releases, The Balvenie has a serious opportunity to put themselves at the top of the pile when it comes to classic design, flavor, and enjoyment.

Availability & Exclusivity?

Only 125 bottles will be released of this liquid, exclusively available through Harrod’s in London. As this is the first release in a series of bottlings, we always know that release one tends to be the more sought-after release over time.

Whether the other releases will be available through Harrod’s hasn’t been declared yet, but if they are and you can craft a good reputation with them then this could be a good opportunity. Fifty-year-old liquids aren’t as difficult to come by as they used to be, but with The Balvenie having such old stocks available for release, it could be a while before you see stocks of this age and quality.

Final Thoughts on The Balvenie 50 Year Old

Older, and more premium single malts aren’t hard to find these days. But The Balvenie has made a point of making them genuinely hard to source and has produced stock that sells out very quickly. Whether it’s from the Stories Range, or with separate new series like this and the bottles that are yet to come. Old Balvenie is still highly lauded and is something that collectors across the world look to have in a collection.
