What sets Martell Cordon Bleu Cognac apart is its distinctive blend, which features a higher percentage of Borderies.

Tasting Notes:

About:
A rather unique Cognac in the XO bracket. A high proportion of Borderies (a much sought after CRU region in Cognac that delivers very frantic liquids) in the blend make this standout as richer, more intensely complex style that harks back to when it was originally bottled in 1912 by Edouard Martell. Still, to this day, Cordon Bleu is synonymous with high quality Cognac.
Appearance:
Ancient Sherry.
Nose:
Such an alluring nose! Milk chocolate, pineapple, prunes, mango, and very subtle oak tones. After a while in the glass the tropical fruit notes become more present. Again, pineapple, mango, a little banana note that really helps broaden the chocolate notes that are running around. It started off as milk chocolate, but is now a deeper, darker style. Some classic Christmas notes of raisin, prune and overly soaked fruits in brandy.
Palate:
On arrival, we have a wonderful balance of older liquids really making themselves know. A nice oaky arrival with lots of those Christmas notes playing first chair. Raisins, sultanas, prunes, loads of milk chocolate, hefty amounts of vanilla, peach, almost a watermelon note that really does show off some the very exotic notes that are within this stuff. The initial aromas of pineapple and mango have died down, but with what you get in return you won’t be disappointed.
Finish:
Very fruit driven, we’re more into the classic notes of apples, pears, even a little blackberry/bramble cocktail notes appearing in your throat. There is something very sharp but welcoming on the finish, it’s almost got a sharp cheddar cheese not that cuts through these big fruit notes in a very pleasant way. I didn’t think this would be worth the hype but is I actually very tasty. There are some drying/oak notes towards the very end of the finish, but again, they’re needed to help cut through the very rich and exotic notes that this has running through it.
Comments:
I rate this! If I was looking for a Cognac to have in the house for special occasion then this would probably be it. I’ve tried Hennessy XO, Remy Martin XO, and Martell XO before, but this has a fair bit more going than all of them, for a slightly cheaper price, too.

Is Martell Cordon Bleu Better Than Martell XO?

When it comes to value, this cognac truly stands out. For those seeking an exceptional Cognac without the premium price of a decorative decanter, this bottle offers a superb alternative. While Martell XO, along with other brands like Remy and Hennessy, may come in fancier bottles, Cordon Bleu focuses on what truly matters: the quality of the spirit itself. Save around $60 and enjoy this classic, understated bottle, perfect for savoring on special occasions, whether shared with friends and family or enjoyed solo. The experience is well worth it.

What Makes This Cognac Unique?

What sets Martell Cordon Bleu Cognac apart is its distinctive blend, which features a higher percentage of Borderies—a highly prized cru within Cognac. You might be wondering, what is Borderies? It’s one of the specific sub-regions, or crus, within Cognac known for producing exceptionally high-quality grapes. The Borderies region, with its cooler climate and increased humidity, results in a soil composition that imparts a unique floral character to its grapes. This distinctive profile makes it especially sought after by Cognac houses, adding depth and elegance to bottles like Martell Cordon Bleu. For this reason, Borderies is essential in creating the rich, complex experience that makes Cordon Bleu so unique.

Should You Buy Martell Cordon Bleu?

Absolutely, Martell Cordon Bleu is a must-buy. If you’ve explored other XO Cognacs but haven’t yet tried this one, you’re in for a delightful surprise. Not only does it come at a more accessible price—skipping the added costs of elaborate bottles and boxes—but the liquid itself surpasses most XO Cognacs available today. Martell has clearly gone the extra mile to create something exceptional here. While some may wish for a slightly higher alcohol content, that could risk disrupting the beautifully balanced profile it already offers. With tropical notes, a delightful aroma, and a smooth, woody finish, this is simply a standout choice.
